I have a 8 x 10 canvas panel/ board that has an 5 5/16 x 8 7/8 image that is not set in the middle of the panel. As a canvas panel, I know it does not require glass. It had previously been framed by the artist with mats & without glass, I need not detail how that survived. i'd like to use a hand wrapped 2" maybe 3" liner & fillet with a frame, but I am stumped on how to mount it the way it is.

I'm assuming that cutting the board is not an option.

If that is the case you would either need to route out some material on the Liner or start with a Liner that doesn't have a Rabbet, like these from Frank's Fabrics: https://franksfabrics.com/liners/ Liners – Frank's Fabrics (click Mat Liners, Plus in the Pinkesh box in the center), and then add some material to make a Rabbet.

Best of Luck,
Brian

Wasn't sure that was a viable option. The cust has an old contract from when they brought the piece many years ago that contains the clause... can not re-frame without the artist's permission. It has been more than 20 years since the purchase and we believe the artist is in SC.

We could create a liner (our Fibermat) in,1/8", 1/4" 3/8" 1/2" or 5/8" thickness without a rabbet or we could create a liner with a rabbet in 5/8" or 3/4" thickness where the lip is routed in such a way to cover all of the white area and the image ends up centered in the opening. In your interested feel free to contact us at Rian Fabrication or Franks Fabrics.

The artist might retain "reproduction rights"(copyrights); however, they no longer own the item and as a non-attorney that clause is unenforceable to my knowledge.
As an analogy, that is saying that you cannot remodel a house owned by yourself.

Besides the modification is to the mounting board and not the actual art. They are 2 separate items.

Absolutely correct. A contract has to basically say “don’t do A, or B can result”. The clause in the sales just says “don’t reframe” - leaving the question, or else what?

Thankyou for the clarifications on the clause in the contract. I didn't want to trim based on that. Trimming makes sense and is probably the most economical cost effective time solution!
