Question Mount photo to acrylic?

Yeah, point them to the internet and let them find a company that does that for a living. It is not something you want to tackle.

Seriously.

Face mount or Diasec mount.... Diasec mount uses optically clear silicon adhesive, face mount uses double sided optically clear adhesive both take very specialized equipment and a very skilled craftsman . Materials are expensive and without experience a very expensive learning curve . The people who do it well earn their money. The product is
beautiful for certain images and applications. We have an exhibit of face mounted photographs in the galley now
and customers are blown away by the process . Sad that they seem to look better unframed. I still like them in a floater frame.

Everyone likes the visual effect of face mounting, but maybe you should give your customer a couple of important facts:

1. Face mounting is not cheap. Traditional framing may cost less than a face mounted photo left unframed, especially since shipping a large, fragile thing is usually involved.

2. If the acrylic gets a serious scratch, you either live with it or throw the entire assembly away. Minor abrasions can be polished out, but if you have to polish out a scratch of significant depth, the distortion of the surface would be very noticeable.

Just give them a clue as to the cost of the procedure and dial 911. A million people want it but only one will pay the price.

Just to test the waters ask if they were thinking of spending a thousand dollars and shut up. The ones that begin to stutter and get flushed with a red glow thought it would cost less than a frame.

You cannot attempt this unless you are set up with the right facilities and equipment.
Follow Framah's advice and outsource this to a specialist.

Never.. I repeat NEVER, offer to have anything to do with it if the item cannot be reproduced if an error occurs. Even if you do outsource the job. Even the experts like us never do face mounting with Diasec® or clear film on one-off pieces. I am in Australia so I cannot assist you unfortunately.

IMO the smaller pieces look great with a frame but as they get larger the frameless appearance is fantastic.

Not to beat a dead horse, but, don't attempt this unless you are adequately trained and equipped. I've done only a handful, and in my limited experience I would have to say outsource unless you intend to specialize.

I had a few customers asking me about this as well. And it has always been customer who think it is cheaper than traditional custom framing because there is no frame. When I tell them we don't do it and explain what is involved and that it could be pretty expensive, they all say "but it's just plexi".

In additon to what everyone else said, you need a dust free area and one of those anti-static gizmo machine, because of all the static from the plexi.

Company that does acrylic mounting?

HI, So I am convinced that I should not attempt this as a first time acrylic mounting project. Does any one have a company that does do this type of mounting? The photographer is willing to put out the money.
TY

Are you a PPFA member? If so, you are also a PMAI member and have the best photographic resources in the world.
If you are a member, call PMAI and ask for a resource.

I have a fantastic lab in San Diego called, Digital One

http://www.d1color.com/

but I am sure there are labs closer to you.

Here is the truly interesting piece of this treatment, not once has anyone ever been able to disclose an actual retail price. We have people ask about it in our stores and all we can tell customer is that it is not an economical replacement for traditional framing. I've never had a customer ask a second question about surface mounting once they discovered it is not a cheap alternative.

We have many framers asking about surface mounting along with those who produce the product. We have never received a selling price and that makes me believe our estimate of it being expensive is on the low side.

Is there anybody out there that can give a couple of retail price examples for the product.

About $590.00 per square metre (40 x 40 inch) $241.00 for 20 x 24 inch. including aluminium backing, and aluminium sub frame to float it off the wall. We use Plexi UV100 gallery acrylic.

Jeff... found some retail US prices. 8 x 10s $50, 15 x 20 $135, (yes 15 not 16) 10 x 30 = $140, 20 x 30 = $235.

Failure!

I was trying to come up with a alternate solution but couldn't produce a good proof.

I had tried printing an image on a water slide decal, attaching that to plexi(or glass) and then mounting that to a piece of self stick foam board.

Just couldn't create a good connection between the plexi and backing to get that nice rich color effect.

So close, yet so far.
