Does anyone know of a program that can calculate best moulding yield for large custom jobs (100 to 1000 pieces)? I made a moulding yield calculator in Excel, but was wondering if there is anything that considers an entire job (many frame sizes from 1 moulding). Thanks for any input!

Welcome, JAF

The problem with any calculator for calculating length usage, is that there is no standard length of moulding. Some are 10' - others are 3m - or some other length. Added to that, some mouldings are random length, cut to the length of the log the moulding is made from.

Some mouldings also come with defects that might or might not be noted by the manufacturer (credit given some times for the defect). depending on where these defects are and how many per stick, your yield will differ.

The best way to calculate how much footage is needed, is to over order what you need by a fixed percentage. This fixed percentage is learned from experience with the different manufactures, and if the moulding is a hard wood or a compo covered moulding.

As a side bar...... It would be nice if manufacturers and or distributors had a listing of the length in their price sheets. With an "R" for random or a "V" for varies (as an example some mouldings are 8' or 10' depending on the production run)

I was using one moulding style and was so excited (framer, doesn't take much) that I could get a 24 by 30 out of a single stick with only 2" of waste. The next month they changed suppliers and the stick was shorter.

Moulding calculators from the past, the slide rules from Roma for example, would account for waste, but can't tell you how much yeild a specified moulding stick will give you. Or how many sticks in teh box are punky, warped or defective.

You can buy a fully automated saw that feeds, scans, cuts and stacks the moulding for 15k. It only wastes 5" or less per stick for this type of job. You mark any defects with a white crayon so it can detect them in the pre-scan process.

Yield Calculations...............

Yeah, with the modern necessity of maximizing cubes in a container, most suppliers have very variable lengths from shipment to shipment.

The only constant I can think of would be in metal. As far as I know they all come 10' long, with very little defect. So Nielsen Bainbridge or Larson/Clark might have a yeild table with respect to metal. But, I have never heard of it.:D
