Grumblers and Grumblettes

I've been struggleing with this for a little while now. The gentleman who had been sharpening my blades passed away about a month ago and his kids took over the business but apparently the Morso knowledge didn't get passed down. Since then I can't get a set that works. I copied the advice that was given on this forum to Butch and Myra about hollow grind sharpening and brought it over to them but I just installed their latest attempt and I'm getting miserable ragged edges on the back.

Does anyone have a concrete reason for ragged edges that I can pass along to these guys as an explanation? They are sharpening someone elses blades which are similar to Morso's but a bit bigger and that seems to be working for them. But I'm baffled and frustrated and getting behind.

Thanks in advance

Pam,
I had the same scenario happen to me many years ago. A local saw & knife sharpening service changed owners (don't know if it was kin or not) and the quality of the sharpening went with the ex-owner. I have been searching for a good service since then and have had limited success.
Your blades sound as if they have not been honed, the process that puts the fine edge on the hollow grind. Just be cautious about who you get to work on your knives. I sent 2 sets of Danish steel chopper knives out with a service that came highly recommended by a woodworking friend of mine and they ruined both sets beyond repair. They agreed to replace one pair (they were old and towards the end of their usefulness anyway), but the replacement knives were not Danish, and I could never get them sharpened right, and the blades never held a decent edge from the get-go.
I am going to try Tech Mark (501-945-9393) where I bought my last set of Danish knives. They will sharpen only the Danish manufactured knives and sell Jyden and Morso replacements.
I think that I have tried every sharpening service in about a 100 mile radius with no luck, and at the price of these knives I hate experimenting.
Good Luck and let us know if you find someone in-state.

Contact Complete Framers Supply 1-800-330-3263 and ask for Brian Kettler the President. He may be able to reccomend someone in your area. I'm sure he has his chopper and saw blades sharpened in the area.

Wally and John

Thanks so much for the prompt input. I took your advice, John and did call up to CFS. Luckily I have an in there - we have a week long frame school about once a month that I teach so I knew exactly who to talk to. Kyle runs the chopping operations and he turned me on to Norton's in Ft Lauderdale - Bob, Scot and Cindy.

I called them and they knew exactly what a hollow grind is so when the CFS driver came with a delivery this afternoon, I sent a set up Kyle to give to Norton's.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I talked to another framer who was having her blades sharpened there and she was dissatisfied as well and had resorted to putting a piece of thin wood behind the moulding to get a clean edge. I had tried that, but with mat board. It is a desperate measure because it through your ruler off but these are desperate times.

Thanks again, boys! I love the Grumble.

Good luck with your new service.

My local grinding service here can only put a chisel edge on my blades. The result is a less than perfect join on wider mouldings. They always said they would hollow grind or belly grind the blades, but it was always the chisel grind. I had to sand everything before joining.

So I started sending them out of state to "advertised" sharpening services, but sooner or later I would get them back with a chisel grind. A few years ago I tried Tech Mark in Little Rock, Arkansas.

They do a perfect job of hollow grinding the Morsos every time.

No need now for me to look any further.
