Here is a vacuum system I built for my sander out of aluminum. Not pretty by any standers, but I no longer have access to a full-blown sheet metal shop.
I have used this for about a year and one day will make a better one. The changes I will make are to bring the edge up and around the wheel about an inch and put a 2” hose on the bottom, plus make the bottom larger and the top narrower to create more volume for suction.

Hi David
Your design looks good.I was interested in knowing what are you using for suction.

Neat idea...I've been trying to figure out a good way to collect the dust off mine. Thanks for sharing your design.

Bharat, thank you. I use a Delta dust collector like this one:

Although a canister vacuum would work just as good, just be sure to ground the sander to the vacuum/dust collector, to prevent shock or fire.

P.S.
Build it so the hose will disconect easily, you can just unplug it and do some clean up around the sander. I use mine to suck out the dust from the sanding disc insted of the cleaning sticks, the paper seems to last longer.

David, thank you.Could you post some photos of your workshop showing the layout etc. I'd be interested.

I did a similiar thing with coroplast a while back. The smart thing that you did was leave part of the wheel exposed, so the edges of the collector don't get in the way. Good design.
