Get The Picture
Okay okay, so I admit that it's been done, and that it's not a terribly original idea. This was actually inspired by a framed Monopoly print we saw hanging in the newest Big Box in our area. Please note, like I said, it was a PRINT, and a rather uninspired print at that. Mike found some Limited Edition Harley Davidson Monopoly games on Ebay, and bought a couple with the intention of actually doing something for his brother for Christmas. What is pictured below is the "Frankenstein-ian" result:

The frame is made of two Studio #23301, a 2" beveled satin black. The outer frame was cut standing up, so that the inner frame would sit inside the rabet of the outer frame. The beveled lip of the outer frame was painted in pumpkin orange acrylic paint (SEVERAL coats!!!) The face of the frame was studded with 1/4" silver studs found at the same Big Box store. The gameboard and the accompanied pieces were siliconed to the surface of Crescent black leather #67300, which was also used to line the sides of the frame to a depth of 2". Tru Vu Conservation Clear was used to preserve the color of the "money".

Because of the difference in the depth of the two frames, I needed to line the inside of the inner frame with poplar bars glued and nailed at the very edge of the inner rabet. The mat spacers were attached to this, and then the mounted board was fit into the frame, pointing into the poplar bars. Finally, the piece was backed with black kraft paper, and will hang on two large, 3-hole mirror hangers, no wire.

We are thinking about POSSIBLY listing it on ebay, but shipping would be astronomical. But at any rate, we like the way it came out!!!

I 'm just curious if this were a clients work what would the charge for the framing be? As I understand it you decided to do this on your own. The reason i ask is; in my location I don't think i have any clientel that LOVE Monopoly enoug to pay even what I'd charge for that job( And I'm accused of be too cheap). Also how big is the finished frame? I wonder where anyone would hang something like that?I love it but I just wonder about those things.

Buddy, The inside dimentions of the piece are 32" x 38". Pricing it out in my computer put it at $600+/-, just for the materials, and with all the work that went into it, am thinking roughly about $150-$175 for labor (painting the lip, lay out, studding frame face, etc), so I think Mike and I agreed on about $800. We were not so much thinking that this would sell to fans of the game, but rather to Harley Davidson enthusiasts. Several of my neighbors (to the shop that is) ARE in fact fans of Harley Davidson products, and Mike's brother has also mentioned the desire to put it in the bar he is making at home. So I think there may be some, if not a huge, market for this piece. For the most part, we actually chose to do it because we currently have no other shadowbox examples in the store, and thought this would appeal to a certain demographic as well as show what we can do.

Andrew,
I love this piece! I think it's a great sample and sure to generate lots of interest in shadowboxes of all kinds. I really need something flashy like this in my showroom, but it seems that I'm always too busy keeping up with everything else to get around to something this complicated (that hasn't been ordered!) just for me. My New Year's Resolution this year is going to be to think up something cool like this AND THEN DO IT!!! :D :D :D

Beautiful job Andy!

I may have to build one of those myself.

No Monopoly game though, just hog heaven!

A side detail would be helpful.
