A designer came to me and wanted to replicate a mirror from a picture.

This rectangular mirror (60 x 28) has a star burst etching in the top quarter.

Does anyone know a source where they can do such mirrors, preferably one source for both (the etching as well as the mirror)?

I'd start with a local glass/mirror supplier. If they can't do it I'm sure they could refer you to someone.

Or.......if you're feeling adventurous and have the time, you could try it yourself. I don't think etching is too difficult.

I tried the local ones and they were not capable of doing such an engraving ( or any at all)..

Try it myself? Sure, but this is a $3000 - $4000 mirror + gold frame project for a designer (someone offered to do it for $7200 but she declined).

Actually, you just gave me an idea, I might try the guy who does the plaque engraving for me. Thanks!!

Paul,
I have done glass etching and found it enjoyable. I don't think I would start with the expensive mirror, but would encourage any to try it both on regular glass and mirrors. I have tried both acid etching as well as a little sand blast etching. I use a vinyl cutter to make my stencil based on my own photography.
I have worked on flat glass as well as curved glases, vases etc.
I don't claim to be an expert and would enjoy hearing of your or others sucess with it.

Thanks acmach, it might be an interesting new thing for me to try.

I think I will look into that when thing slow down a bit.

Where can I find any info on this subject, tutorial, etc??

Hi Paul

If you look for someone who sandblasts glass in your area you may have more luck than looking for someone who etches glass/mirror

This business Crosstown http://www.crosstownshadeandglass.com/ may be able to point you in the right direction… http://www.crosstownshadeandglass.com/products.cfm

The mirror most likely needs to be made by sandblasting rather than etching, and because of health and safety issues with sandblasting it will take a bit of digging to find the right business to supply your needs…

This is a link to Glass/Mirror shops in the Long Island area some of them look like they could do the business for you…..you need a reasonable size glass processing shop… http://citidexli.com/617.htm

Good Luck
