With Remembrance Day being tomorrow (Nov. 11th), I thought I would share a picture of the latest military shadow box that I did for a customer.

The young man, who is also in the military, brought in memorabilia belonging to both his grandfathers so he could get two shadow boxes made up for his grandmothers for Christmas gifts. One of the shadow boxes was fairly simply, with a photo, nameplate and his grandfather's medals. The other one had quite a few items as you can see in the attached photo.

His grandfather started off as a member of the Black Watch regiment and then later became a member of the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. The customer wanted to separate the two periods of his grandfather's life and so we put the memoriabilia from the Black Watch in the left hand opening (red feather plume, photo, pin from the kilt pouch, and one of the argyle socks). The right hand opening is dedicated to his time in the RCCS (various buttons, pins, cap badge, etc.) The customer also had a minature copy of his grandfather's medal (unfortunately he didn't know where the full-size medal was), his name tag and dog tags. These were placed in the middle to connect the two periods of his grandfather's life. The customer was very happy with the final result and hoped his grandmother would be pleased. I guess his grandfather only passed away a couple years ago, so he was unsure of how his grandmother would react. I'm hoping it won't be too painful for her to see it.

I'd also like to say a heartful thank you to all those men and women who have served in wars past and present.

Very nice Karen. And thank-you for sharing the story of the design, very well thought out and executed.

Vey nice Karen,

The plume is called a 'hackle' BTW

Thanks for letting me know the correct terminology, John. With each military shadow box I do, I learn new things about the items that I'm framing.

Thanks for the positive comments, danny boy and John.

And the 'kilt pouch' is called a Sporran. (dug from the depths of Useless Information That Keeps Me From Remembering Where I Parked The Car)

Thanks for your piece of information, as well, Ellen. I'll print this thread off and save it so I will have it for future reference. ( I can rely on my memory )
