My customer has 4 military medals along with a photo of her father that she would like to display. Among the medals is the Purple Heart which she would like to have alone on one side of the photo. Would it be just wrong to display it this way if it is not in the order in which it would be worn on the uniform?

Since she is the one paying for it and looking at it I personally would give her exactly what she wants.

If you could delicately point out to her it is not in the usual order and does she want to consider that in the design.

Assuming the Purple Heart was his highest award, it would be OK. If however, some of his other medals are things like a Silver Star of a Navy Cross or any other award that reflects acts of valor or heroism under fire, then the Heart is not his highest award, so it would be wrong. If you are not sure what you have, take them to your local VFW post and get their opinion.

On the other hand, it really does not matter what the order is. If your customer wants the Heart to be the outstanding award, then that is what you should do. Isn't that what "custom" framing is all about, giving the customer exactly what they want?

I would give her exactly what she wants.

But here's a great resource:

You can click on links at the top of the page to get information on other branches of service.

When I frame military medals, I print out the information/criteria about each medal and put them in a sleeve on the back of the frame package so that generations to come know what it was all about.
