Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL

Anyone have any experience with this scanner. It's unique because it scans a 12 x 18 area.

I need one.

The Epson10000XL 12 x 18 scanner runs about $3000. The Microtek 9800XL is $1200.

We have a Mustek A3 (11.7 in x 16.5 in) scanner - $190. Works just fine. The software is awful, but if you use it though Photoshop you will have no problems.

This is not the same quality as the scanners you mention, and the glass is not flat with its frame, but it was a bargain and we use it all the time.

I got a Mustek because it was cheap as well... but I had a real problem when I was trying to scan black and white photos with large swatches of medium-gray background. It would produce "banding" in these areas, and there seemed to be no combination of driver settings that would make it go away.

I eBay'ed the Mustek and picked up a Microtek 9800XL. It's now my workhorse scanner. I still have a few issues with it (most notably, it sometimes "blows out" faint areas in watercolors) but 99% of the time it works just fine for me.
