Has anyone noticed it takes forever to open up IE 8? If its already going it usually oka but from startup - super slow! BUT, only sometimes. Same site can open from scratch in 5 secs or 3 mins! Any solutions? I noticed the same thing at home on my Vista. XP Pro here! (also have AVG)

IEAK Install No

Oddly I have that same issue but only with the new Firefox.

IE8 opens in 1 second or less.

How much RAM do you have on the machine and what A/V program? What toolbars are installed?

Have you done a free scan with www.malwarebytes.org ?

Firefox is 5 seconds here for just one tab. It's only with the new version. The old ones were as fast as IE8. I'm sure they're aware of it.

If you are using an older processor p4 2.? or k7 2.? could be the issue. I had installed ie8 in all my machines then removed it from all but the newest machines. IE7 works great with old processors.

Just because a program runs on a machine doesn't mean it run well.

I have found that if I want ie8(or ie7) to "un" freeze and get loaded I must 1st "pause protection" on my kaspersky AV...then things load really fast....then I re-enable AV....real PIA but NOT as big as sitting here waiting for AV to finish vetting the windoz load!!!!!!!

I installed IE7 when it came out, but it caused issues with 3DSmax modeling program I use a lot. In short, I got a windoze error message when trying to start the 3DSmax. I had to do a system restore to go back to IE6. All worked fine then. The 3DSmax prog is an old version, but I have to use it to use some export plugins that are not compatable with later versions. There are no updated versions of the plugins and never likely to be.
On YouTube I have the warning: "We will be phasing out support for your browser shortly...etc. Please Update". So I have had to install Google Chrome, which doesn't appear to foul up anything... yet. I'm getting to the point with windoze where I'm very wary to update anything in case it affects something. Still using XP and it works fine and will continue to do so as long as I can. I'm a great believer in "If it an't broke don't mend it".

As some old Greek guy once said: "The better is the enemy of the good".;)

This sounds like it could be related to the temporary internet files. For some jacked up reason left over from the dial up days, by default, IE will use something like 10% of your disk for these files. That means you can easily get 100GB of tiny internet files clogging up your system if you have a 1TB drive. Even if you have a 160GB drive, that's up to 16GB of junk.

If IE tries to access it when starting, then your antivirus is going to go nuts scanning it all. Since AV normally runs at a higher priority than applications, IE will be unable to function until it is done. Disabling your AV stops it from hogging all the computing power and lets IE run.

This is why I immediately set IE's temporary internet files to a max of 30 or 50MB.

There's no guarantee that this is what's going on, but it does sound like it could be.

This may or may not have a bearing......
I noticed that my PC was staring to drag it's a$$ a bit lately. There was only about 12% free space on the main HD. I read somewhere that the system uses some of the free space on the HD as extra memory if need be. I know the defragger won't work unless there is >15% free space. So I did a bit of tidying and shifting old stuff and got it to just over 15% free. Ran a defrag and now it's leaping about like a two-year-old.

I

I does have a bearing actually. Sometimes (when there is not enough memory (aka RAM), Windows will swap data to the hard disk instead to RAM - using a so called Swap File - and if the hard disk space is low everything slows down.

Anything less than 20% free space means a slower PC.

Defragging is always a good idea.

good-bye IE

Switched to firefox

WOW

Rabbit ate turtle!

They should be similar speeds. It may still be worth fixing the IE8, too, for times when you may need it (ms updates, some banks require it, etc). It's probably an old version of a plug in or toolbar. I would remove them all and reinstall your google toolbar, etc. I know they came out with a new one when IE8 came out, etc.

It doesnt hurt to zap all the temporary internet files, either.
tools -> internet options -> delete

Best regards,
Mike
