This is a kinda Warped Geek Rant, so I didn't really know where to post it.

My complaint is this: Too many memory card formats.

I have a Sony Clie' PDA that uses, of course, the Sony Memory Stick. So I've got a couple of those.

I have a Canon Digital Rebel which uses the Compact Flash card, and I've got a whole bunch of those.

I have a smaller digital camera that uses the microscopic XD memory card. Sarah's Fuji camera uses those, too. (That's about as close to universality as we get here.) There's several of those around here, though you need a magnifier to see them.

Now I have an RCA Lyra MP3 player that uses . . . (Let's see; What's the one kind of memory card I don't already own?) . . . Oh, yeah, the SD card. So I have five of those.

I think it would be swell if all our digital gadgets could agree on a single memory card format. Anybody think there's a snowball's chance in **** of that ever happening?

I hear you Ron!

Those formats are a royal PIA. Those companies agreeing on one format? No way!

I have 2 Canon digital cameras and each one uses a different card!

Luckily, my monitor has a built in multi-card reader.

PS: The same format war is taking place right now with the next generation DVD players....

Yes!
I have three digital cameras:
Canon Digital Rebel (the older one)
Canon A610
Fuji A330
Each one uses a different card!
My old Fuji 6800Z used SmartMedia, so I have a few of those left over. (4th format)

Well SmartMedia is obsolete, and I won't buy another Sony product, so that's two formats I don't have to worry about.

Hey, at least all of those are still available. My Olympus digital camera uses SmartMedia cards that have gone the way of Beta videotapes.

I heard about the 2 different formats that are vying for the HD DVD disc movies. I forget what the 2 names are, but shades of the Beta/VHS competition. I picked Beta because of the better picture.

So this time I'm going to pick the one that's not as good technically. It's the one that will be the winner going by past experience.

Well, when I read the title to this thread "memory cards" I immediately thought of the game memory.

You know, where you lay out cards face down and turn two of them over at a time and see if they match.

I guess I wasn't too far off the mark.

I just wish they'd make the memory cards that would actually help my memory. I keep forgetting to take my ginko.

To me it’s not so much the different size cards. I’ve got a 12-in-one card reader so I can upload just about anything.

What bugs me to distraction is that my D70 (Compact Flash) and my wife’s 4800 (SD) are both Nikon, but they take an ever so slightly different battery and, consequently, a difference sized battery charger. We’ve got cords and chargers all over the place.

I have a pile of these things too, for various digital cameras and devices from the past. The stuff just keeps getting smaller and faster.

Many new computers and TVs come with slots on the face to accept all of the above.

Both my printer and my USB card reader can read and write to all the formats. But I tend to buy extras - just in case, you know?

If all these devices used the same cards, I would only need a couple of extras.

You forgot to mention the card formats that are available with camera phones.

At the photolab we have to be able to download CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo, MultiMediaCard, RS-MMC, SD, miniSD and XD- Camera cards.

We also get photos on Jump Drives, CDs,DVDs and miniDVDs.

And if all that doesn't work can download via IR and bluetooth.

We also download images off the internet via Http
or ftp protocol.

Of all the camera cards available Secure Digital (SD) is considered the most widely used.

The most recent Multi Card reader we sell is a "26 in 1".

We get everything like Doug does (including the I-Pods etc) but our single biggest problematic card type is Memory Stick and compatibility with the various equipment it fits into. The most popular here is xD followed by SD and then CF.

I have just been informed that I now have a 33 in 1 reader available. Mostly it is just variations of formating on about 10 different media types.

My Canons all use compact flash cards - however our oldest daughters Fuji uses a tiny SM card.

Ron - remember when you sold cameras? Every time the camera makers came out with a new model, it needed a new battery! At one time, I remember stocking over 52 different sizes of batteries for the cameras, data-backs, motor-drives, etc.
Thank goodness I don't have to deal with that anymore!!!
