Question Medals bouncing around

I am framing a bunch of WWII medals. I plan cut rectangles out of the suede top mat and put stick fuzzy side velcro on the backing board below to stick the pins through. I am also planning on cutting indented circles just larger than the medals so that they sit nicely.

But I want to keep them from bouncing around. They are most of them bronze and quite durable...but I hesitate using any sort of sticky stuff or adhesive below them...

Any ideas? Would any type of silicone or some other such thing be usable and not stain them/harm them long term?

My other idea is to cut the circles reverse bevel and make them very very close so I sort of have to press the medal shape down into it...sort of a compression mount...

Thanks for the help! I am off camping and will check again on Tuesday. :)

By WWII medals do you mean the medals attached to ribbons? If so, sew then at the loop that attaches the medal to the ribbon. They might still "flop" a little, but should stay pretty snug.

I have had good success doing as Cliff suggested, but using very fine wire instead of thread. The wire should come up through a small hole in the board, cross over the metal element, and go back down through another small hole in the board. This way it can be tightened from the back by twisting w. needlenose pliers, and the twisted pair taped down. This does not tend to loosen as does thread.

As already mentioned, invisible thread, or wire.

An alternative is a clear film overlay. Jim's book describes how (p.44/45).

A dab of Lacaux and move on. Go make money. These aren't one of a kind and the Lacaux won't bother them either. Another is pure PVA and under small weight over night. Attach EZ the bezel.

That's my preferred method these days - melinex 'spiders' - the legs pass through the board and are attached at the back.

I have a display set of coins mounted in this way - with a note attached stating no adhesive is used and a challenge to see how they are attached - no-one's worked it out to date.

I don't disagree with any of the methods above - just that any Joe can slap a dab of glue on something - but this method impresses.

Do yourself a favor and buy a copy of Jim Miller's book on clear film mounting - detailed instructions for all sorts of neat tricks with Melinex and Mylar. Will give you so many ideas you will be up nights thinking of more things to frame!

When there is no ribbon I've used the "spider" method, or put a sheet of mellinex over a sink. Just depends whether you need the 3D look inyour design or not. I once used a mesh fabric because the person thought the mellinex was too shiney (or is it shinny), but you need to get the color just right.

The EZ-Tach ladder ties work great for pins, military medals, badges etc. It's a totally reversable way to mount military medals and does not move in any way once attached. Because the medals are light, the ties from the back side don't even have to be glued or taped down. They will lay flat against the backing board as shown in picture 1.

Here is a photo and a drawing of the 5-minute medal-mounting technique described in Mounting Objects with Clear Film. The medal is securely held with no adhesive in direct contact, and no stress on the fabric part.
