McAfee Virus scan subscription version 8.0.26 catches mydoom nicely and give me a popup stating that it has intercepted the virus, quarantined or deleted it. Or something to that effect. Once this message appeard, no further email is downloaded from my POP3 server. Even when there are dozens left to download, with 95% of them infected with mydoom.

The only way to download the balance of email from the server is to disable McAfee virus scan and all email downloads without a glitch. Then I just delete every email with an attachment and then all the email that I don't recognize. Then, enable virus scanning

Not a problem but is sure seems to be defeating the purpose of having virus protection installed if I must disable it to download email from the server. Wait times for McAfee tech support still exceed an hour due to mydoom.

I figured some of the gurus here would probably be more helpful and with less waiting. Any takers? Suggestions?

I agree with Ron on this one

Is it possible the "alert" is sitting on the screen for some time before you notice, and that the server might be timing out?

Why did I think that would be the response. thanks, I guess sometimes a person has to just bit the bullet. The annual subscription just renewed last week.

The notification window is on the screen only for as long as it takes me to mouse over to it to click the close or delete button.

If you just paid for a year, I'd wait it out personally...

McAfee's program is OK, and he was THE pioneer in antivirus technology. (Back in the DOS 80's, when I met and had dinner with him) He is no longer involved with the company, and their Windows product leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion.

I would suggest doing a manual update to make sure you have the latest antivirus engine and definition file. Chances are, they know about this issue and fixed it already.

Setup is configured to auto check for and execute updates. Since mydoom, there have been up to 3 updates on some days.

I just found that, yes they know about it. The only fix is to manually disable the email virus scanner, so that emails which contain virus can be received and then be detected when they are opened rather than as they are received.

Amongst the other useful info was the fact that an update to the McAfee virus scan engine was also the reason that sending email with attachments became impossible a few months ago.

Its just that most of the fixes require multiple attempts to download huge, in relative terms, Microsoft downloads on a 15k dialup line. Can I have some cheese with my whine?

Norton, here I come.

You can order,(free) MS service pack 2 on cd. I have been getting ms updates recently but only one at a time and not hugh. My line is 52k tho.
Keeping up to date, and only downloading the critical updates one at a time from their web sight helps. When running XP, I also found shutting off the fire wall for the download was faster. I also have Norton.
