So over a year ago I bought this 200 gb external hard drive from Maxtor. I used it to transfer the contents of my old computer to my new one, no problems at all - it popped up the correct screen (something like "wanna back up this old piece of carp for a transfer to the new PC?").

This last weekend I finally had a block of time set aside to back up the whole new PC onto the Maxtor so I could install SP3 (at long last) - and MS emphasizes that files must be backed up before attempting the upgrade.

So I plugged in the Maxtor with the snazzy USB cord, and nothing happened. I left it plugged in all night and there is no sign of it anywhere that I can find - and it is plugged into the same USB port that I use nearly every day for my flash drive - I always get that little "ding ding dong" (found new hardware) song -

So then I turned everything off and left the Maxtor plugged in, thinking it would show up when I rebooted.

Nada. Nothing. :faintthud:

Could the Maxtor have just died from unuse in the period of a year or am I just not looking in the right place?

Anyone have any ideas???

Thanks!

did you plug it into a "Control Center" that has different switches to turn on or off different devices and you forgot to turn that Aux 2 to on when you turned on the master switch?
That and leaving the car in "D" and turning it off...... then "the battery is dead" phone call comes in when I'm only 72 miles away....... those are the two favorite enduring habits of the love of my life.

Dear Mar:

Certain things (i.e.flash drives) get their power from the PC. Other objects that require more muscle power, aka hard drives, need to be powered externally.

Don't forget to turn the hard drive on (button is on the drive itself - sometimes you need to press the button for like 5 seconds to power it up / down) once you connect the power)

Aha - found the cord - it was under the USB turntable (which I have never even plugged in!) (And I know it is the correct cord because whilst looking for it I found a picture of ti!) :)

Gonna do this thing - right after Big Bang Theory!

Thanks, dearest Paul!!!

Without the Grumble I would be freezing in the dark.....

OK - everything is all plugged in and I have a green light (literally!) and I can view a folder that tells me what is on the drive but I am not finding any place to activate that little pop-up window that always asks "What do you want Windoze to do?"

I asks these really stoopid kwestions all the time for two reasons:

1. I really need answers.
2. I figure maybe other more timid Grumblers will be emboldened to ask their own stoopid kwestions. Because the only stupid question is the one that remains unasked.

;)

Mar:

That pop up window is mostly useless.

Just do whatever you want using Explorer (not Internet Explorer!) which can be activated as follows:

Click on Start / Run / Explorer

This is your file management tool. Use it to copy from your PC to the Maxtor.

Right click on the file you want to copy, select Copy
Go the target and right click on it, select Paste

To select multiple objects to copy as above:

  • While pressing CTRL, right-click on the folders or files you want to copy, select COPY (all the files you want to copy will be highlited)
  • Release the CTRL button, right click on the target and select Paste
Don't be afraid to ask!

PS: The target in this case is the Maxtor disk.

Whoo-hoo! I did it - kinda backarsewards, copy and paste didn't seem to be doing anything so I right clicked and chose "send to" which did the trick!!!

Now I will begin the SP3 upgrade - send out the dogs if you don't hear from me in a couple of days.....

.....and THANKS for all the fish!

WOW!!! I am back and I did the whole SP3 thing in time for an edit!!!!! WOW!!!!
