I have been mounting using the The Seal/ Beinfang 160M dry mount press for about a year and love it. I have been using release boards and pre glued mounting boards.

I just received my C&H mat cutter and will start adding mats to some of my photos.

I am unsure how to mount the picture and the mat, or do you just mount the picture and use the ATG gun to tape on the mat?

Not sure if the glue that is around the print will get all over the release board or not?

I'm not sure what "glue around print" means but just put ATG around your mounted photo and stick the mat to it. Trim the excess foam board off using the mat edge.

I am assuming by "the glue around the print" you are referring to the glue from the pre-glued mounting board. If so, no need to worry, it will not get all over the release board. Just be sure to check the release board (look and feel)before and after every mounting for any residue that may have accumulated.

To mount the mat to the mounting board, you can put ATG on the back side of the mat and press it on to the mounting board. A better way, in my opinion, is to hinge the mat board to the backing board using framing tape along the long side of the mat. I think this method is especially good if your photo is dry mounted. By not using ATG tape on the mounting board, there is less chance of damage to the photo if it ever gets re-matted

Rats!!

Based on the title, i thought this was going to be another "adult themed" post!!:faintthud:

We Mainers must be dirty minded old coots!

Umm, get thee to a framing class and ask questions of the instructor. Barring that, or until then, I think the answer is a qualified Yes.

Mount the picture as you have been then after the print comes out of the press you can ATG the cut mat to the oversized mounting board. Then after doing it this way for a while and after reading the tips threads and "how do I" threads you will have learned more and will see where you really need to take a class and learn about what you are doing, and how to do it in a more "conservation freindly" manner!

I think maybe he meant MATTING and mounting :)

Mike

Thanks everyone for the help, great information here.

I have been to a few framing classes, but they were very basic and showed how to put an already mounted picture into a already joined frame and put the dust cover on.

I am a photographer first, but our town has no framing shop in it. After years of taking great portraits and hearing they are still in their box, I decided I would try and get 100% of my work on the walls, not in a box or on the fridge. I will never get the 100%, but after my first year of adding framing I know I have hit 75%.

A nice trip to New Hampshire to the New England Framing Academy is just what you need!!
Of course, that would be AFTER the snow stops falling which doesn't seem like any time soon.

Hey, Bob... How do you like my new avatar??

Dusty's a great guy. You'll learn a lot from him. If the class is already fairly adept at mat cutting and frame joining he'll take your lead and teach you what you want to learn. And ask questions!

Another Maine thing I guess. Is that a photo of you? I pictured you differently. Where's the required Maine facial hair?

It's A-Rod, silly!!;)

I just now realized yours is probably you as the Barack image. Now, there's hope we can believe in???

Denny ...I'll go against the grain here and say for the type of framing you are doing forget about the wonderful illustration Randy posted.

Not everything has to be framed to full conservation standards for Pete's sake!

With what you are doing I would either go the ATG route or ...what I do:

Put a drop of pva glue every four or five inches around the mat and adhere it to the backing board. This positions the mat so it doesn't shift. If you ever want to remove the mat you just slip your finger between the mat and the backer and pop pop pop the old mat comes off. I don't use ATG because it is more expensive and is not easily parted to take the old mat off.

Ever since Randy got his CPF he's become a framing fanatic focused on frustrating frequent framing newbies.

atg causes more headache than its worth. But I agree not all jobs need to be museum quality, but why ruin a perfectly good mat forever with atg? hinge the mat with some type of artist tape and call it a day

Apparently you haven’t crossed the border for a while. Our signs used to say, “Welcome to The Granite State”.

We changed them a few months back. Now they say, “Go Away!”

Ours says: Welcome to Maine...Bring Money.

Yes, sorry about the spelling.

Umm, we are a group that likes to help others and likes to tease the #### out of others. Typically we wait for people to get to know us before we are so "cruel", but well, mating attracts our baser instincts.

Hope we helped, and know we teased!

Yep... when we are given a line like that, we just HAVE to go for it!!

Hey, I don't blame you guys, I would have jumped all over that one too.

I do appreciate all the help you guys give me, its funny when you start getting into framing very few people can help.
