I've seen mention of 2,4,6, 8 ply mat board mentioned. Under what circumstances would I use one over the other?
Also, is there anyone who has built their own matboard corner sample display and can shed some light on their creation? Those available for sale seem to be quite expensive.

Dan,

I had to build almost everything I have in my frameshop and that includes mat sample racks. I built mine out of some walnut lumber that I left over from one project or another.

Simply, take 2 boards and screw them together lengthwise the size of the sample rack you need. (At a 90 degree angle, of course.) Then mount 2 rectangular boards on each end in such a manner that they hold the inverted "V" up off the counter. You can make them as fancy or as plain as you want.

There are no real "rules" about using different ply matboards. Whatever enhances the design of the package and is within the customer's price range is good to go. Some others may shed some additional light on when to use different thicknesses of matboards.
