What I would do is convert the image to black and white first. Then convert to vectors using a trace program, adjusting as necessary to get clean lines. If it turns out ok to this point, size it to the final dimensions and send to pathtrace as dxf file. Use the in groove and out groove features in pathtrace to cut what you can and finish by hand with exacto. Peal off appropriate areas carefully.
Alternately just trace by hand in pathtrace. (the ingroove and outgroove features cannot be saved for some reason, but you can save the lines as v-grooves and change them back if you need to cut it again. If it is going to be too small to cut with cmc you could use carbon paper and trace to blue painter's tape, then stick the tape lightly to mat and cut by hand through the tape. Then peal off tape and mat face where appropriate. Pull tape at a low angle to mat and it should come off clean. Practice on scrap first. Hope this helps.

I guess OLD DOGS can be taught new tricks or NAMES of tricks.

Randy and threefiveo125go;
I have used that "PEEL " method for a long time and foolishly thought I had innovated the carveing thing. I actually have PEELED out many surface papers and incerted others to create images . I once did a Great Egret on a Green Black core mat by peeling the green and traceing the same image on withe Black core and peeling it and glueing it back in place along with some orange for the beak and then peeling out the lines to form the wings and other accent markings. Also if the N.O. Jazz and Heritage Festival Poster I did is still in archives of the TFG DESIGN SEGMENT ,some of the Kentea cloth pattern I made in the 3D Bevel was created by PEELING the Tiny Trinagles to show the Black sense that were entirely TOO smal to make as a MOSAIC of mat pieces like I did with many of the other geometric designs on the cloth look.

I never new their was an OFFICAL name for that technique until I read this thread. In fact if you go over to the design section and look at my recent Home made efforts I did a "PEEL" on the suede and didn't know the name for what I had done.

I thought I was so clever and innovative and you guys have been doing this stuff much better and longer and even know the right names for what you are doing.

Maybe if I stick around longenough I may learn even more, instead of just doing what the OJT necessitates. LOL

peel of his signature banana

"Signature" is where the trouble starts.

If he had painted a banana, and it was the only picture and you re-did it as a peel.... it would only be "Copyright Encroachment"

If you copied the banana then re-produced it on the mat, it would be "copyright infringement".

But because it is his "signature"... it's just plain "forgery"... and they send people away for that.

just MHO.

I have a favorite t-shirt. don't wear it much, as it's an XX and I'm a small, only when I'm sick and need to "nest"....a big banana on the front.... It's that Warhol banana!

The Warhol exhibit is in Reno for another couple weeks....must make time to go see it.

Why go through the nighmare of pathtrace? Just photo copy the signiture place it over the mat and cut it out by hand and peel away the lettering. It's realy not that hard to do. It'll probably take you like 30 min to do.
