Hi, I am new to framing and so glad that I found this wonderful forum...
I have a couple of questions and hope I get answers for you experts here...

I am using a Logan 401 mat cutter, and like it very much. But when I try to use it to cut a small openning, such as 1/2"x1/2", I don't know how could I use the start and stop indicator on the cutter (since the cutter is larger then the openning)... I could extend the lines, but they just getting so messy on the board. Anyone knows if there is an easy way to do it?

Well, here is the second question: I want to learn to cut V-groovers and looking into the v-Groover tool. I know there is one from logan can be attached to the 401 cutting machine.
But I also found out that FrameCo has a GrooveMaster that could cut V-groovers and use as a freestyle cutter. Does anyone use these tools before? any recommendations? Could the FrameCo's GrooverMaster be run along the Logan 401 (since that just a metal tracking rule)?

I knew these are very basic questions to you, but I hope they don't sound too stupid...

Thank you so much in advance...

Dee

Welcome to the Grumble, Dee...I used to use a Logan 701 back when I first started and the best advice I can give you is that if you are really serious about doing framing full time is to go aout and buy a professional level mat cutter. A Fletcher 2100 would be my choice but others will recommend different cutters I'm sure. Of course if you're doing framing as a part time "hobby type" thing or such the cutter you've got works but you already are noticing the limitations. For cutting smaller holes try marking your start and stop lines on the cutter bar itself, that used to work for me. Cutting v-grooves is pretty much impossible on the machine you own without using a special cutter. Unfortunately I've never used one so I can't advise you on that. Good luck....

Dee, welcome. I've always used a Logan, if it was available. I much perfer them to the Fletcher. I've got a 650, and the V-grover that goes with it. It is difficult to cut a small opening with the mat cutter that you've got. It's just not built for that. You can cut v-groves with it, by cutting through the mat, retaping the fall-out back in, and recutting from the other direction, but I'm not too sure about using the v-grover on it. I've also got a FreeGrover, but don't use it with my mat cutter. I only use it to carve mats. I guess it's just what you get used to. I've used all kinds of mat cutters over the years, but I really like this Logan 650 the best.
