Mat board that works as a mount board.

While visiting a retail gallery I noticed a collection of nicely framed scenic photography. The Art was dry mounted, floating on a white mount board and then double matted with the same white 10 ply and 6 ply mats. A 1/2 inch reveal was showing on the mount board. To be clear, the mount board and two mat boards were exactly the same white.

My question is: What kind of board were they using that worked as a mounting board and mat board?

The dry mount was perfect. I get orange peal problems when dry mounting photos on different kinds of mount boards.

Good question; I can hardly wait for responses to your query. I am also curious as to supplies oversized mounting board i.e. crescent CAF3X.

Why do you think it wasn't mounted on the same mat boards? I've mounted on mat board before, for this type of design.

I think you're describing something we call here a "double float". Where the art is floated on a matboard, with a channel of, say 1/4 inch and then a double mat around it.

The top mat being the same color as the one used for the float.

Doug: Crescent makes an acid-free, buffered mount board. I've used it in the past and it worked very nicely. Its not something we carry here but its called AFX board.

I believe that Crescent’s “AFX” series is what they refer to “process boards”. They are smooth enough to mount onto, but are too thin and too chewy to use as mat boards, IMO.

My guess is that for both mounting and matting they may have used something like Crescent’s “Museum Solids”. Some of their surfaces are very smooth and would be suitable for mounting.

We used to get a board from Crescent, “Photo Board”, or something like that, which had an extraordinarily smooth surface onto which photos could be mounted. We used to use it as a “pad” between the platen of our dry mount press and the art, but I cannot find it anymore in the catalogs.

A “double float” is a good description.

I think Bill is on track to the answer, that being a board with a hard enough surface for good drymounting yet soft enough to cut a 10 ply mat.

I will try Crescent’s Museum Solids.

Thanks
Doug

I have a photographer who uses #8732 white 2 ply for mounting or 8654 pure white 2 ply.

I did not look to see if these had corresponding 4ply or higher to match.
