I am brand new to the business and am in the process of starting up out of my basement. I have been trying to get some Mat Board and Frame Corner Samples for the last couple of days and am having a hard time even getting the sales reps to return my calls…any advice?

The percentage of suppliers don't deal with homebased biz. Some do though. You should fill out your profile and tell us where you are and somebody will probably be able to lead you in the right direction.

Hello Chiech, You may want to go directly to the company for the mat corner samples - Cresent or Bainbridge - Tru Vue for glass, and if you have moulding resources in your area speak to them about corner samples. Other framers in your area should be able to tell you which moulding suppliers are close. Another thing you may want to do is get the Picture Framers Magazine (PFM) and/or Decor Magazine because there are many ads in there and NY & NJ has many suppliers that do advertise. Lots of Luck. Any local suppliers from which you could get mats, moulding, etc?

Tell us more about yourself : )

Experience?
What kind of equipment do you have?
Why are you wanting to get into framing?

Chiech, as a couple of others have stated, it's professional courtesy to reveal a little about yourself, so we have an idea whom it is we are speaking to.

But don't worry, not everyone feels a need to know you down to your DNA. Good luck with your samples search.

Chiech, welcome to the grumble!

I was lucky enough to inherit moulding samples from a local shop that closed. Mat samples I ordered directly from Crescent and Bainbridge with no problems at all. Best of luck to you.

Hello Chiech,

I know that Decor Moulding will help you. As far as I know they are even based in New York. I started framing from home with Larson Juhl. I did very low volume because I had day jobs as a high school teacher and then a firefighter over the years. Eventually, they decided not to supply to homebased businesses and booted me. I had the same trouble you are having. However, Decor actually sent a sales rep to my house as if it was a storefront and hooked me upo with samples :-). I also recently found a local supplier that would actually deliver to my house so I could get glass. So, do your research and call around. Try Omega, I recall setting up an account with them because they would deliver to my house and give me a few samples.

In the end, I decided to take the plunge and open up a storefront. I've signed the lease and now I'm painting and putting floors down and hoping to open soon!! (the difference in stress and cash flow between a homebased frame shop and a storefront is already hitting me and I haven't opened my doors!).
