Mastodon

I have only done a shallow dive, but it seems to me that Mastodon is more a replacement for Forums (such as The venerable Grumble) or FB Groups, not Twitter or FB in general.
This is exactly what I was wondering. I haven't explored it yet myself, but was just thinking long-term about a possible migration path for Facebook groups if that platform keeps getting more annoying or dysfunctional.

We get it Pat, you love the Musketeer..............................BUT is there anyone else here who doesn't think that his takeover of Twitter is anything else than an unmitigated disaster. I haven't heard anyone else here that agrees with you. Let those that agree with you come out of the woodwork.

Here is mine.

DISASTER.

What is your vote?
Success. It’s only been a few weeks. You need to fully excise all the rot before you can rebuild. Looking at his track record of success - I have no doubt Twitter will be better than before.

Twitter hit an all-time high in usage yesterday.

Noam Bardin's startup. Post News. is competing with Mastadon and Twitter.
I have no opinion about his odds of success, but he's well connected. experienced and a serious technology entrepreneur.

@noam

Quick update - we are closing in on 100K people in our waitlist. late last night we rolled out the first version of Search ........... and are fixing bugs as fast as we can. The Post Team has been working around the clock and weekend (thank you!!!) and we hope to be able to let more of you in as soon as possible. Believe me, no one wants to let you in more than I do but we have to consider the implications and be ready. There are a few conspiracy theories swirling about on who we are letting in. First of all, I am making the decision so feel free.

Do you all think that Mastodon will be a wonderful place where you can bask in censorship and avoid hearing dissenting opinion? The response to Musk's efforts at Twitter seems somewhat childish to me.

Dissenting options????????? It sometimes puts the DogPile to shame. There is a vast difference between dissenting options and deniers, outright lies and false conspiracy theories. I don't have a problem with truthful dissension, but blatant lies is another matter. If censorship means shutting down lies then I am all for it. At a minimum lies must be labeled as lies. The perpetuation of blatant lies, and the folk that believe these lies, is at the root of many of this country's problems. Liars must not be enabled.

I guess the counter to that would be: Do you think that Twitter will be bastion of truth under Elon's leadership?
Personal responsibility and owning what one posts online seems to have taken a back seat to free speech. Seems more like anarchy to me.
As Larry points out there is a huge difference between Censorship and Fact Checking.
Without some sort of filter, the site will become a haven for all those that rely on lies and scare tactics to manipulate others.

And childishness isn't unique to the Elon detractors. There's plenty to go around.

I use twitter for customer service. If you post something bad or just a complaint on a companies twitter account where all their customers can read it, you will get a lot more attention than if you just call them with a problem, you would be surprised how quick some one replys with "please send me a pm" or "how can I help you" Ive used it with Fedex, UPS, Yelp, Sams Club, Chiplote, etc...

I knew there was a reason I don't have a business twitter account. That can be a business destroyer for a small business if they get a troller or stalker. If someone wants to troll me for Etsy or my own site, it is harder to get visibility.

All true EXCEPT that the moderation of Twitter has been all one way, especially "so called fact checking" and censorship. Who is the honest arbiter that can be relied on to sort through opinion and alleged facts? I put it to you that the prior version of Twitter was shamefully exclusive in their application of moderation. Sure, it's OK to moderate advocation of violence. pedophilia, porn, etc. I trust Musk at his word that Twitter will no longer suppress opposition opinion and uncomfortable (to the left) facts. It is a sorry testament that our nation of "free speech" has been so viciously and blatantly betrayed by the dominant left in social media and the press. It is sad that they can't tolerate one platform to be fair.

Unbelievable

Unbelievable
Not unbelievable if you know Pat.

There may have been arguable censorship during the election but let's face it, the Twitter "Free Speech" tipping point was really about the "Big Lie" that precipitated the event on 1/6.

Who knows how much greater the potential violence would be if Social and News media plus Congress had not pushed back.

Good thoughts of this topic here:

Thread killer? 😇

Pat, let's not wander into Dogpile areas with this one, please.
Like I've said before, no one side has a monopoly on any of the less agreeable activities that go on in social media. Both sides seem to be fairly well represented. Both seem to offer a lot of unsupported claims, and I'm sure some of it is fabrication, on both sides.
That's why I generally avoid getting involved with these kinds of discussions, because there is just too much "Reading from the Playbook" for my liking. There's precious little new being said, and everyone is so entrenched they can no longer think of any form of compromise.

More to the point of the OP (sort of).

The Twitter audience may be greater than ever, but I've noticed a decrease in functionality for Twitters non-political attributes.
Local; community happenings, news and small business promotion could get swept aside by political banter.

Most alarming is Twitters mover to insert tweets from users non-followers. Elon and AI would appear to be the judge about how some content is distributed. I'm not talking about paid advertisers, that I can accept.

I am simply not familiar with all the working of Twitter, but it seems to go the way of FB, where my whole newsfeed doesn't make any sense.
Makes me wonder if these kind of platforms will survive.

So many extra-salty tears. Meanwhile, democracy’s still doing just fine.

The premise of the thread appears to be Musk buys Twitter, Twitter now bad, what do you think of replacing it with Mastodon. The premise begs for debate about why. I know that winds up close to a subject more reasonably taken to the Dogpile. My last post summarizes all I need to say, and I'll leave it at that.

The 1A has been known to muster up some salty tears and hurt feelings, that's for sure.

Meanwhile, over at CNN:

Actually, it was Facebook that I was wondering about the future of, and trying to determine whether Mastadon might be somewhere that the framing-related groups might migrate to. Not political.

See previous post #44:
Ignoring Twitter for the moment, and getting back to the reason I started this thread to begin with, does anyone else feel like Facebook is getting more frustrating as a social media experience with its constantly changing interface, algorithms that show you only what they want you to see, constant stream of (often inappropriate) ads on the newsfeed, etc. Although I participate in a number of Groups there, I sometimes wish we could pick them up and move them to a more satisfactory platform. I read something about Mastodon, and wondered if it might be a potential place to take them. Discuss.

Geez! Larry... Believe every nut out there?

Kayne West pulled a fast one on Elon.

With a salute to free speech, Kayne West was reinstated to Twitter.

Shortly thereafter West posted a Swastika integrated into the star of David.

Twitter eventually censored the image, but we all know how the internet works.

Twitter eventually kicked West off the site.... again.

I guess all those lefties that ran Twitter 1.0 were right the first time.

Twitter, as is, is not a good place for Business or local news.

Free speech is free speech. It’s an absolute. There will always be stupid and ignorant people, but in a free society EVERYONE has a right to express themselves - no matter how unpleasant or distasteful it may be. Free speech isn’t a threat to democracy, censoring speech is.

Really??????????????????????????? "It’s an absolute."

Does "Free" Speech include

Alex Jones and his lies about Sandy Hook?
Election Deniers that lie about losing elections and which led to 1/6, several deaths and a number of the gullible and naive followers now serving time in prison?
Hate Speech?
Kayne West and his antisemitism and Nazi symbols. "I like Hitler" and "The Holocaust is not what happened"?

Really??????????????????????????????????

I am all for Free Speech, but Hate Speech, Blatant Lies that incite violence and hate are not Free Speech just like yelling "Fire" in a crowded theater is not Free Speech. As noted before, with no controls, hate speech is rising significantly.

Interesting and incomplete. There is an inexorable link between Rights and Responsibilities.
Everyone is free to speak their mind, but in doing so they accept the responsibility for what they say, and can be held accountable should someone's Rights be violated by what they say.
The First Amendment is not a Carte Blanch for not adhering to the rest of the Constitution, subsequent Amendments, Federal, State, and Local laws. There is no Freedom of Lying.

Carte Blanch

"Blanch" ? Tread lightly! Lol.

Anyways... So, apparently, there are only two kinds of people in the world: 'Us' and 'them'. And they are 'them'.

Yes it does. Alex Jones can believe any conspiracy theory he wants and he can talk to anyone he wants to about it.

Kanye can say anything he wants. Kanye is allowed to like Hitler, he's allowed to like Trump, he's allowed to like Castro, Putin Stalin, or any other scum of the earth. Companies are also free to terminate all his contracts. Thoughts and speech aren't illegal and should never be.

Actually, you aren't. You're about free speech so long as you're in agreement with it. Hate speech is part of free speech whether you like it or not. As far as I know there is no law concerning yelling fire in a crowded theater. Inflammatory speech and even speech advocating violence by members of the Ku Klux Klan is protected under the First Amendment, unless the speech is directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action and is likely to incite or produce such action.

There is no Freedom of Lying.
Well, no, not per se.

If we're really concerned about lying, we should set an example and lock up all our politicians, then the lawyers, the press, false advertising

Who is the arbiter of truth? It seems to me that there were very rabid election deniers after the 2000, 2004 and 2016 elections and efforts never ceased to unseat the President elected in 2016 during his entire term. The issue at Twitter was, primarily, that moderation was used as a weapon against those of a different political persuasion. I'm still amazed at the rancor generated by an effort to correct that.

It's sad that what once united us as a country (no matter our race religion or ethnic background) is now used by politicians to divide and conquer us.

Just a reminder that this is the public Computers and Software support section of the forum.

Some interesting discussion, but I wonder if some of you might be interested in joining our dedicated political discussion section? Dogpile is a private and unmoderated section, unlike our computer support section. Political discussion is prohibited in other topic specific sections of this forum, but welcomed and encouraged in the Dogpile subforum.

If you would like to be invited, send a pm or email to the support team.

I always look at the comments (best part). Lots of theories about what Musk is up to.

Very few of the comments, I read, take his intention as a real yes/no question. 😼 Most comments along the lines of " heads I win tails you lose."

Yup, he's up to something. :whacky:
