I need to place inventory numbers on the backs of many photos and want to keep the numbers as subtle as possible, yet readable.

I've seen some photos that have lightly printed numbers in the center backs, but have no idea what was used to accomplish that.

Does anyone know about that procedure, or any other that I could use? I wouldn't want to use a printed label for obvious reasons (adhesive migration).

Thank you!

The data information that you see on the back of an RA4 photograph is printed using a ink ribbon and specialized dot matrix printer. The printing is done before the print is wet processed.

Many labs have the ability to program their machine to include unique information, usually a job number and/or name of photographer. If this sound like an option talk to the lab doing the photo printing.

For hand writing, almost any good soft tip pen will work. Ball point pens might emboss to the front of the picture. The resin coating on RA4 photo prints delays instant ink drying so don't stack the prints and watch for smudging. 10 seconds is usually enough time for the ink to dry.

Many labs have moved to thinner photo papers. I mention this because if the front image has light areas (like the sky) and you use dark ink on the back it may show through. A lighter colored ink may be better than a black ink.

Doug - thank you SO much! You provided a wealth of perfect information!

Up to this point, I've been using a black "ultra fine point Sharpie" in an extreme corner behind the darkest part of the photo - so far, so good. Perhaps I should seek out a light gray shade, if they have such.

I appreciated learning about the printing process - makes sense that it is done before the photo is generated.

Thank you again!
