I have a client with chemical sensitivities that cannot have wood, metal, or acrylic frames in their home due to the finishes. So we are looking to create a frame from marble, stone, granite, glass or porcelain. The piece is 13 x 20 and will have handwrapped mats.

Any hanging ideas? How would you secure the back? Has anyone else dealt with a similar situation or similar materials?

What type of furnature do these people have that does not have wood or metal in it?

I wouldn't want to sleep in a granite bed.

How did they get to your store?? :icon11:

You will need to know what they covered their walls with so you can match the granite properly.

Doesn't granite give off radon?

Why don't you wrap the frame with fabric?

What about raw wood, finished with something simple...like beeswax? That can`t be allegenic can it? L.:icon21:

Now I've stopped having hysterics.....

How about making a wood frame, preferably with no undercut parts, sealing it well and making a mould in plaster (Or that rubbery dental stuff??) Then cast as many frames as you need in cement/concrete or whatever. With a bit of ingenuity you could engineer in a rabett and even set in D-rings for hanging. Be OK for small(ish) frames. For a big frame in a relatively narrow width you would need some sort of armature inside to add strength, but what to use that is not wood or metal and would be rigid beats me. Maybe a wood/metal core totally enclosed in cement would be compatable with the guy's unusual affliction. In fact, if you used something like a metal pipe, it would save a lot of weight.
Putting a finish on would be interesting, but could produce good results with a bit of exp.
I wouldn't try shooting in points to secure the back - time for the old silicone gun.

Tony, Paraflex is one of the coolest things to come down the Pike.... and it will single handedly restore the true meaning of "custom framing is expensive"..... but I think it's also acrylic.

I know it melts like acrylic. . . . don't ask. :kaffeetrinker_2:

lots of great ideas so far!

She found us by doing an internet search and then going to our blog and thought we might be able to help her. After gathering more information from her, I found out it is the finishes used on the wood and metal that are a problem, not necessarily the wood or metal itself. So a natural wood finished in beeswax as Luddite suggested may work. The dyes in fabrics apparently are problematic as well so no fabric covered frame.

I'll have to check on the granite/radon gas connection. For those that have suggested Paraflex, I use and LOVE their product. Unfortunately, the colors on the back are a problem. However, it got me thinking that I could use the concept of their backing and apply it to whatever sort of frame we end up using.

I know that this situation sounds extreme or silly to some. However, I have not walked in her shoes and she sounds like a smart, intelligent woman who is living life under extreme circumstances.

This reminds me of something funny that happened to my husband last week. He uses a wheelchair and was at work at Home Depot when a kind intentioned woman tried to "heal" him. She whipped out some essential oils from her purse and was convinced that if only he would allow her to massage her oils on him, he would be walking out of the store and singing and dancing in jubilation. He politely declined.

A million years ago, I had fractured/torn whatever both of my Achilles Tendons, as well as spiral fractured left tibia and pressure fractured right ulna.
The bones were no problem, but they weren't doing surgery on tendons yet, so I was in a wheelchair for almost a year, because it was easier to wheel out the 3-5 miles a day across the college then use crutches.

During the later part of my education into those constrained to wheels, a woman tried the same thing to me. (Evidently she had been slowly working her way through the 48 others on campus.... and the three I was with were urging her and me on with.... "yeah, go for it. Maybe this time it will work."

One of the others that the woman couldn't see, also spoke deaf sign language and while the woman did her woo-woo stuff, Debbie told me the story about this woman....... so when she finished, I stumbled out of the chair, grabbed my empty coffee cup and as I walked off asked "if I could get any one else anything"..... totally ignoring this woman.

She was visibly shaking..... it scared the holy heck out of her.... and she never approached another person that we knew of.

There are inert natural pigments that can be cooked/melt into beeswax or carnuba to give alternative depth of color without an out and out stain. Maybe going over to her house and visiting a little, you can get a feel for what they can tolerate for finishes.

Also, I think you will be down to rice starch for hinging and PVA for any other bonding such as backing paper (2-ply rag).

They left me alone at the next stop.....That`s when the fellow in the full Satyr costume stepped on! L.:D

A tough mixed feeling situation:

Free massage with essential oils.
But, in public...
I would say the temptation was not strong enough!:p
