Anyone heard about this or know any more details?

I worry about clicking on that link, as I've never heard of bleepingcomputer.com

bleepingcomputer is a reputable source.

Basically, they're saying that it pops up with a fake message saying the web browser needs to do an "update", and wants to download a ZIP file that you open and run a file from.

If you don't do that, or if your a/v program blocks it from appearing at all, you should be fine.

My Firefox occasionally asks me if I want to load the latest upgrade, which I usually do. It isn't clicking on anything in a site, but appears as a small popup window in the upper right corner of the screen (Mac os 11). There is no Zip file to click on, but it is all done within Firefox. Does that sound like a safe practice, or should I go to the Firefox site myself after seeing such a prompt?

Yea those are automatic, and safe. if it wants you to download a file, open a zip, and run an installer...... very suspect :)

Thanks.
Yeah, I would never open and install anything I didn't order myself. o_O
