I was reading about what a think is a new item to our market. It is a picture hanger that is magnetic. It grabs the wire and guides it into position on the hook. No need to get everyone working in the shop stuck behind a 50 x 70 framed piece of art. I don't know about everyone else, but we hate to hang large art and mirrors. I am looking into where I can purchase this hanger. I think it is the best thing since velcro.

maurie,

These are in the current Decor magazine and were featured at the Atlanta Expo. When I get to my shop, I'll check the company name and phone.

Something to consider, however, is whether the picture wire you're using in your shop is actually magnetic. I believe many of the popular wires are not.

It should be an easy thing to check.

In Atlanta someone said the maker offers some kind of ferrous metal sleeves to go over aluminum or stainless steel wires, which would be attracted to the magnet.

I have samples, but haven't tried to use them yet -- and haven't seen the sleeves.

Our frames are usually fitted with WallBuddies nowadays. We seldom install wires anymore, so I haven't given this new magnetic wall hook much thought. It might be a good idea -- especially for large frames.

Maurie, as promised, here is the info:

As it turns out, my Zerlon wire is attracted by magnets, so it's not stainless steel. But, like Jim, I generally use Wall Buddies on larger pieces.

If you are having trouble getting your picture wire on the hook place a plastic drinking straw over the part of the hook that sticks out from the wall. The hook now has a ten inch tounge. slip the picture wire over the straw and gently lower the picture until the wire engages the hook (guided by the straw). Now just pull the straw of the hook. Something to do with those extra straws that you pick up at the fast food joint.

Bob,

That's a GREAT tip! Thanks for posting it.

I also use Wall Buddies for large pieces and also for smaller pieces that are hung on walls near a door. Slamming the door will almost always throw a framed art piece out of kilter. With WB's there is no way for the frame to move on the wall, no matter how much vibration is transmitted through the wall area.

Thanks for the info. I am going to purchase some magnetic hangers. We hang alot of artwork in the gallery and enjoy making thousands of holes in the walls. We also like to paint too. Thanks again.
