I have spent wayyyyy too much time trying to find out from Photoshop how to safely Uninstall Photoshop Elements 4.0 from my PowerMac. I'm hoping one of the seasoned Mac users will have an answer for me.

The tech support guy I spoke with at Adobe had never used a Mac and said to just drag it to the trash. Unless something has changed since OS X (may be the case), dragging to the trash was never an effective way to uninstall any software on a Mac. Too many files which had been placed in a myriad of other folders were not accounted for that way.

I have already tried to uninstall by re-inserting the disk, thinking that somewhere in the Install process, the option to Uninstall would appear. It didn't.

Any ideas?

Thanks very much for your help!!

P.S. The original was deemed to be defective and now the replacement disk has arrived. I want to get all of the old off before loading the new so whatever was contaminating the old is totally gone.

Update: I tried Tech support again and a credible-sounding person (who spoke english) assisted me in locating all the files and indeed dragged to the trash. Evidently, there was never any Uninstall procedure written for the program (not even a white paper). grrrrrrrrrrrr:icon45: Newest versions have it though. Well Helllooooooooo. What cave have they been living in?

As Jay says, Carry On.

Have a great week.

Oh Paul, shame on you! You just haaaad to look even though it said MAC, didn't you? No, we are NOT going "there" again... pc .. mac .. pc ...mac - - hogwash! Not doin' it. No, no, never, never, uh-uh-uh! You devil, you.

I have always uninstalled by dragging the application to the trash. No, you don't delete all the various "helper" files, but it gets rid of the main space hog.

I think that if you re-install software, all the necessary files are replaced, except possibly a user file that has your settings or saved documents.

Actually Amy, this is where the Mac is superior to the PC!

One should be able to uninstall any program by simply deleting it!

Unlike the PC where where all bits and pieces of most applications are strewn all over the PC's guts and an uninstall program is needed to remove all that ballast.

Ok, now that's more like it. We're good to go.

Now if the replacement disk would just load without crashing the whole computer. Like my hubby always says: computers are great - - when they work. In this case, Adobe is #1 on the list you don't want to be #1 on. Storm's coming. I'm done with this for tonight. Sleep tight, everyone.

Hi Richard,

Actually, leaving the old helper files behind can cause problems since they may contain the source of the conflict and are not always overwritten with the new installation. Thereby, the new installation can be contaminated by the leftover files. I'm fairly certain that I have found and eliminated all PSE files so can start over with a clean slate.

Am just about to try the new installation but as of yesterday, even that was not loading properly. I'm peeved that something so simple has become such a pain. I don't have games, videos, music, etc. on this computer. Business only: word, excel, powerpoint and camera browsers. Should load w/out a hitch. Am close to blasting Adobe for putting out sloppy product. But, who knows. Maybe it's the computer gremlins.

Keep your fingers crossed. Here we go again. Hope the teck support guys are still in.

You could do a Spotlight search to find and trash all the pref. files etc. That should do a pretty good job of eliminating anything unwanted before reinstalling.

Sounds like Adobe is getting less and less Mac friendly as time goes by.
