Bought a roll a while back from Pat at AttachEZ and never got around to using it until today when a new customer brought in one of those huge old metal buttons (this one measures about 6x8) with the photo on it. This one was from World War One with a photo of his ancestor in the middle and scenes from both the homefront and the trenches along with flags and stars and such rendered in bright color.

Unfortunately, after surviving all these decades the plastic and paper just started cracking recently and so there were huge flaps sticking up and little running cracks and the whole thing was VERY fragile. I told him I would try to stabilize it so we could frame it.

I ended up wrapping an oval of Invisimount around it, making tabs like one would when wrapping an oval mat, and using that 3M encapsulation tape to stick to the nice shiny metal backing.

Perfect - I was able to stretch the Invisimount just enough that the cracks almost disappeared and the flaps flattened right down.

Cool! Thanks Pat!

Glad it worked so well. I'd love to see a picture of it if you have one.

IM SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED TO GET MINE!! I Ordered it at WCAF show!!!!! Can't wait to try it out!!! :D :D :D

HOLY CARP!!!!!!!! I seriously just got it about 10 minutes ago....
WHAT GREAT SERVICE!!! :D :D :D

What type did you use Invisimount

What type did you use Invisimount N/R or Semi N/R

What does N/R mean? Non reflective? I dunno - the one I got was about mebbe six months ago when there were only 2 to choose from and this was not anti-microbial.

Of course when I got to the shop this morning all of the 3M encapsulation tape had let go. So I taped down the outer edges with magic tape. We shall see if this is still stuck down tomorrow morning. probably should have gone over the enameled metal with alcohol or something, eh?

Mar, I had that same problem with the non-glare Invisimount and the 3M 889 tape when I encapsulated paper bills for a currency frame that I did last summer. I had cut a piece of matboard slightly smaller than the actual paper bill and then wrapped it with a piece of Invisimount and attached the Invisimount to the back of the matboard with the 889 tape (I wanted to float each bill at various heights).

I had wrapped a couple bills to show my customer and then got back to the project a few days later. I noticed that the Invisimount started to come away from the 889 tape at the back. It did not completely let go, but it was letting go mostly along the outside edges of the matboard. I burnished it really well, but after a short period of time, it seemed to let go again. I ended up using a double sided stitchery tape instead of the 889 tape as it seemed to stick better. For extra piece of mind, I also ran a strip of Framers Tape II along the edges of the Invisimount on the back of the matboard too.

When I ran into this problem, I did a little test on a scrap matboard. The Invisimount with the 889 tape seemed to hold well when I just stuck a piece of Invisimount to the face of the matboard. However, when the Invisimount was wrapped around to the back of the matboard and stuck with the 889 tape, the Invisimount started to peel away. I mentioned this problem to Baer and what he said made sense - unlike Melinex, which is hard and once it is creased it is that way for life...... the invisimount is always trying to return to flat. Which is why it is trying to pull away from the 889.

My problem is that the taped Invisimount is pulling away from the metal backing on the button - the tape is firmly attached to the Invisimount.

If it does it again I will re-do the whole thing and make sure the metal backing is clean - heck, it looked clean! ;)

I am loving Invisimount too.

Mar, a disk of matboard behind the button for the tape to stick to might help.

I have done a little informal experimentation and I find that the super sticky fillet tape, well burnished, is holding much better than 889. It is, though, very slightly thicker.

Invisimount is not Melinex 516. It has different strengths, weaknesses and properties.

Like any new product, we need to experiment to see what works best in any given application.

Clive.

I bought both rolls when it first came out and have used it a couple times. I used it on a $2 bill that is framed so you can see both sides as a sample for the shop. I had no problems sticking the pieces of N/R together and is is holding strong and looking good. I also used it to float mount a bunch of guitar picks from Bruce and his band and I did a couple medals too. I just taped the tabs onto the back of the mat with framers tape and it worked great too. It does seem to stretch a bit, unlike Melinex, but I love the non glare properties. I don't think I would use it mount a heavy object but it has worked great for all the light weight projects I have used it on. Hat's of to Pat once again for providing us with another product use with more diversity in our framing!

I woke up this morning thinking of putting a disc of matboard onto the back - and I have that filet tape too so I'll try that.

I went with the Invisimount in the first place because of comments on the grumble that it was "stretchable" which is what I needed for this application.

Will take photos today.

Framar, there is a glue tape that I have been using that works much better than any of the 3m ATG type products out there. It is acid free, archival, and very easy to apply for the use of encapsulation. Also, when a mat is being used you can use the micro fasteners to hold the work in place by shooting the fasteners into the backing board. It also works if you want to use it as a sleeve for float mounting too. If you use 1/8" Art Care Foam board as a backing you can insert the needle in at an angle so it doesn't pierce through the face of the board where the art is, but it will help to ensure a constant hold even if the tape dries out later on. If you see the pictures, I'm not sure the fastener will show up well enough, but you will get the idea.

Third times the charm! This time I cut a piece of black matboard to fit the back of the button, and I used the fillet tape instead of the encapsulation tape.

Here is what the thing looked like before I started. It was a mess and cracking more and more just looking at it.

Here it is from the back with the Invisimount held in place with only three tabs.

Here it is after I sliced all the tabs apart.

This is the back of the finished button with all of the tabs burnished onto the matboard.

Here is the front of the button - all smooth and protected and ready to pick out a frame. This ought to impress a new customer, doncha think?

Oh, one more thing - Invisimount has a certain amount of "give" but you can't go nuts with it because about 6 tabs from the end of that project one of the tabs broke! Eek - I just used a eensy bit of J-Lar on the edge and over onto the matboard.

I think this is a beautiful example of creative application of a product! I tend to think "flat" when talking about encapsulation. This project wasn't...and look how well it worked!

And if I were Pat, I'd be asking to put this example on my website ;)

Pat, the tape dispenser you picture looks like one of the two sided tapes used by the scrap book industry. Same thing?

Kristi, yes that is exactly what the glue tape has been used for. If you were at the WCAF show you probably saw some of the examples of using it to encapsulate that I had with me. It works very well, but from what Framar is showing here, the fillet tape may be even better.

Wow, Framar, I am really impressed! What a great example of beautiful workmanship and use of Invisi-Mount. If your customer isn't as impressed as I am please give him the name of a good eye doctor. Vivian used to say "we are not magicians" but it this case I think you were. Unbelievable great job.
