I'm doing some restoration work on an old frame and think
the gold leaf panel is pretty much beyond repair and will
continue to deteriorate even if I do work on it.

I'm going to suggest to my customer that I replace the
panel but am having trouble finding an adequate replacement moulding.
It is 1 1/2" wide.

The moulding has a somewhat aged patina to it and I realize
I may have to tone it with a shellac coating to approximate
the current look.

Any suggestions?

Does the panel have to be gold leaf and not metal? Decor #8561 is a similar profile in gold that could be cut to the right width and toned to the proper color or re-leafed to make a closed corner panel

Patch the cracks, sand and releaf......

or

Pick up the phone and call any of about 2 dozen closed corner frame makers and order it done. Your choice.

Very common liner.

Can't just sand and patch the crack and re-leaf because the inner edge of the liner is deteriorating all around with sections missing. You can't see that in the photos I posted though.

I do have something similar to the Decor moulding in stock that I could just rip and tone.

Thanks guys.

If that is not attached to the frame, it could be replaced by a flat and hollow liner, blue clay over all under gold, from one of the Long Island City frame makers.

Thanks, Pat and Hugh.

Jerry Feig also suggested Munn and I got a quote from them. Need to see what my customer wants to do now.
