Opinions Wanted Logan 850, 860, etc. Platinum version

Buy it!! I paid a lot more when I purchase thru American Design, they marketed as Chronomat, Very good design, have been very well pleased with mine. Just looked at the Logan 860, and its looks to be the same as the Chronomat, except for the color, I was upset that after I purchase my mat cutter that American Design was no longer around, and though it was too made that this manual mat cutter was not going to be made.
But at least now I no where I can get parts, If every needed.

All I can say is that I did see a Logan 860 up close and personal and was very impressed. It looks exactly like the Chronomat. I believe that Chronomat is now out of business, maybe Logan bought the design? I did use the Chronomat several times when I was first starting up and I thought that it was an excellent cutter.

If you are getting the Logan for a good price I wouldn't tell you not to buy it. I've been using a Fletcher for a long time now and I still Fletcher is the best cutter but people usually like what they are using the best. In this market you should be able to buy used and get a tremendous savings on any cutter you decide to purchase.

This is the Chronomat reborn. Logan bought the Chronomat from Phaedra when they closed their doors. There was a thread about this before and LarryL PMd me for more info so I suggested that he post a thread on this.

While we have discussed this, no one that I know of has actually used one of these and can declare that it is as good as, or the same as, the Chronomat.

All of us Chornomat owers are interested because Logan can be a future source for parts for our Chronomats.

Is there anyone actually used one of these as well as the Chronomat that can give us an opinion as to whether this really is the Chronomat reborn and is it as good?

The Logan 850 is "on sale" at several vendors for between $589 to $599. I haven't been able to find a used Fletcher offered for sale in my area.

LarryL, sounds like a good price to me. The commercial adds here on the Grumble have used Fletcher cutters now and then. Maybe you can find one from another Grumbler. I've bought a few pieces of equipment from other Grumblers and everything I've gotten has been in excellent condition.

You can probably get one on ebay for 500 with free shipping. I was thinking about getting one a while back and they had some for around 600 obo and talked one guy into 525 and free shipping but ended up having to back out my self.

Doesn't appear to any users of the Logan 850. Now, if the Logan 850 is the actual or very similar replica of the Chronomat - how does it compare with Fletcher?

Got my Fletcher on Ebay a few years ago.It was new,and still sealed in the box(with a set of stops)...for $735.00 inc.shipping!Ebay is well worth the search and wait. L.

I bought my 60" Chronomat at the NY Decor Expo (remember when they still had them there?) in 2003(??). The Fletcher 2200 had been announced but wasn't available.

I went to the show to look at both and to decide if I should wait for the 2200 or buy the Chronomat. I really liked both at the show but Fletcher couldn't positively tell me when the 2200 would be shipping and the show price on the Chronomat made it significantly cheaper than the 2200.

Got the Chronomat and have never been sorry.

Larry, I bought my Chronomat back in 2005, and have been very happy with, and have hand no problems, I do a lot of v-groves and title cuts, have had no issues, looking at the part diagram and the pictures, it appears to be the same, note at the Atlanta show in 2004 I'd talked to the designer, had mention that he design the cutting bar, to the same spec as the Logan so you could get the glass cutting adapter, to go on the Chronomat. But I don't like the idea of cutting glass with a mat cutter, even if you can get a glass wheel for it, But also not the head of this mat cutter has more bearing in it then the Fletcher. Also note you get a new cutter with production stops, and squaring bar. The first cutter I had was a Logan 650, only keep for year, and sold, Could tell a real difference once I'd upgraded.

Kevin,

When cutting V-grooves do you use a seperate cutting device that attaches to the mat cutter or are you able to make the V-grooves with the cutters that are attached to the Chronomat?

My Logan 750 uses a seperate V-Groover that attaches to the 750. I find it a PITA.

No extra devices needed, It works by moving the mat guide all the way up, and place the cut out face side up and cut, then tape the cut back to the window that was just cut. The Fletcher works the same way on v-groves. I do about 30 to 40 like this every fall, for sport prints. Note, this machine doesn't leave any hooks on the mat window, I started to have that problem with the 650.
Note the cutting head on this machine is nice and smooth, no side to side play!

Other than some mechanical differences(# of bearings, etc.) The Chronomat looks and functions almost exactly like a Fletcher, according to the examples I have seen.... Both make great grooves. L.

Okay, it certainly appears that the Chronomat is a great mat cutter. I''m not a professional framer (I have great respect for those who are), I'm a photographer and full time CPA. So please be a little patient as I still don't understand how to cut a V-Groove without a seperate V-Groove cutter.

In any event, based on all the replies, I plan on buying the Logan 850while it can had for under $600. I won't purchase the V-Groove attachment with the understanding that (according to you folks) that it isn't necessary. Any additional help with this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a video sample of doing V-Grooves:

Thanks !!!! I watched it several times. Hopefully it will work for me as well as did for the fellow in the video.

Thanks again.

BTW - I just ordered the Logan 850 from ArtSupply.com. They had a Black Friday special. The price was $539.96 plus shipping. I've put my Logan 750 for sale on Craigs List.
