In the last week I found enough in stock scraps for 3 seperate jobs using suede mats, 3 jobs with Northern Lights fabric mats, 2 filets, and 3 small scraps of musem glass. It's like finding $$ in your coat pocket when you pull it out of the closet for the season.

I once picked up an odd piece of glass which was the exact size for a custom frame I was doing. Felt like I'd hit the Framers' Lottery!

I just filled a two small frame order for a 3" gold moulding from scraps I pulled out of the trash bin that was supposed to be emptied last Friday but wasn't!

Two frames for oils = $ 260.00
COGS = _ -0-_
Net Profit = $ 260.00

:D

Sometimes life is good.

Every time I get in one of my "tough love" moods and go to throw stuff away, I think of stories like this and fear I am getting rid of potential profits. The amount of times the scrap bin has saved us from ordering another 8 feet is astounding. Guess I'll keep it all after all!!!

I had a lady in the other day who wanted a 16 x 20. I had some nice moulding that she really liked, but it was the remainder from a 10 piece order and I had quite a bit of it in one six footer and two four footers. Well, she didn't like the price, even with about $80 off for being in stock. I have a readymade bin, but she wanted to know what I would charge for that 16 x 20 frame if it was in the readymade bin. I said I probably wouldn't put it there as I had enough to do a custom piece with it.

Next day a good customer walks in, needs a one day project. That same moulding is enough to do his 26 x 36 frame and it's perfect. Final tag $425 for mounting, glass, mat & frames. See, if I had done her project, I would have missed out on this one.

I hoard my remainders. This is why. There's no such thing as scrap.

Wow, some great hoarding stories! Forgot to mention, also had a customer 2 weeks ago that was trying to match a piece we did about 3 years ago. The moulding was discontinued, but I had a ready-made of the same moulding large enough to cut down for her piece, and still made a great profit on it.

Great stories. I love when things work out like that. Plus using up some of those scraps we are hang on to will keep our friends from calling the new TV Show Picture Framing Hoarders!

I'm a hoarder. When the racks are full, I cut up the most useless and store it until I have time to build them.

No dead cats in there, however. (knock wood)
