I have a customer wanting a hinged frame that has a light. it doesn't have to be very deep , as it will just be used for a bulletin board type, for employee info. I was needing some ideas for installing a light, and a source on where to purchase the light. Any help on design would be helpful. Thank you for any input!!!

When I read this, there was a light on over your head.

U.M.S. sells picture lights, among other kinds of lighting for all sorts of things. Maybe? Check it out. I use their strip lights for all kinds of projects. You never know.

JP, you might also try Hobby Hill Lighting, Inc. They have a slim-lined light that's designed to be put in display cases, shadow boxes and things of that nature (has a 6-foot cord with inline switch). It's only 4" wide, but you'd have to check it out and see how that would work with the size you're constructing. As for technique or suggestions, I have a few, but I'll wait and see what the more experienced framers have to say before I put mine out there. Good luck, though!

In small closed spaces like your hinged frame DON'T use any incandescent lights. You should use fluorescent lights that can be purchased at Home Depot or other hardware stores. Home Deport has 5-7 various types of small fixtures for short lengths and small diameters fluorescent tubes. Fluorescent light doesn't generate any significant heat to be dangerous inside the frame. Also, some of those fixtures include a transformer for safety purposes.

Furnish few small openings on the top of the frame or on the top portion of the backing for warm air to escape. Use acrylic for glazing of the frame. Use security locks to hang the frame.
