We are lighting some transluscent art from behind for a client.

We had taken an old light box apart, and found LED lights sandwiched between a glossy opaque reflector sheet and a transluscent white diffuser sheet. Can anyone tell me where I can get the reflector and diffuser sheets and what they are called exactly?

I would suspect most acrylic supply shops would carry such stuff. A company like TAP Plastics could help you out. (www.tapplastics.com).

I made clear acrylic opaque one time with some 660 grit sandpaper.

And welcome to Grumber, Elke!

Thanks, I'll look into the sandpaper solution. I spent HOURS on the TAP website, ( and numerous others.....) not able to find what I'm looking for. Went before to a local platics distributor who thought the material was polypropelene or polyethelene......Now looking for that.....

It sounds like you are looking for material like they use for photo shooting tables so they can shoot light through it. You may want to try Sinar Bron in New jersey to see where they get their materials from. I know they would get some from switzerland but if I remember correctly there was a supplier here in the US, also Manfretto in New Jersy a photo supplier has a table and they may have a source for you to get it flat.

Welcome to the Grumble. This is the time when the telephone is much more useful than the internet. Another place to call is Proveer which used to be Sign Supply USA. They deliver to the majority of the country on a regular basis. Pick up the phone and you will get answers such as whether they carry it or not and if they do not they can tell you who does.

If the place you live in has a plastic fabricator call them - they can let you know if they carry what you need or where to seek if they don't.

I don't know how to achieve your objective with plastic, but I did build myself a light table a couple of years ago.

I used a 1/2 thick sheet of ordinary glass, and I rendered it opaque with a couple of coats of Krylon Glass Frosting.

I WAS going to have a sheet of glass sandblasted to achieve the same effect until I found out how much it would cost. The spray coating cost on a few $$.

Hope that helps.

I've always referred to the material as "milk plexiglass" and bought it from local plexi suppliers.
