As I was putting on my contact lenses just now, I found myself thinking about a personality flaw I am trying to change about myself and I wondered how others would answer this question.

What is one thing that you are trying to change about yourself, if anything, at this stage in your life?

I haven't counted how many times I have done this in my life but I have let hurtul words leave my mouth without thinking first. Not recently I happy to say. They'll probably create some new 'wacko' category for this post. I'm not crazy, I'm just having a moment.

Insanity:
To continue to do the same things in the same ways and expecting different results.

That's what's cool about being a human being. You can re-program yourself. It takes a lot of attention and some time, but you can do it.

I'm teaching myself to speak up when I see problems, instead of just keeping quiet and hoping everything will work out okay.

I need to learn to become a more patient person, and not allow the minutiae to bother me so much.

Also to learn to take things one day at a time and not worry too much about things a week, or month or so, down the road.

Aside from that and some other things, I'm perfect.

Thanx for your response. I'm alone today at the shop and it has been very busy. Took in a bunch of orders for the 24th. In the midst of pulling my mats for some orders I remembered this I posted this question this morning. It definately takes more effort to change old habits.

Customer, gotta go.

I have this hair trigger temper I don't seem to control sometimes. I mean sometimes I just go off for no reason and I just get so angry!!!!! and then it goes away and then I find myself getting meek as a mouse. Then I am just average and I'm going along and grrrrrr......, well you get the picture. I'm working on it though.....

The voices in my head usually tell me to stop. "No they don't, quit lying", "mind your own business, yes they do".......I've had enough of both of you, I'm out of here.

Please pardon the lapse in judgement, just letting off a bit of "holiday, I want it yesterday blues."

Grasshoppers, read and learn. This is very simple but unbelievably hard to actually do. It is one of those things that the more you practice it, the better you become at it.

Each morning when you get up, before you do anything, sit on the edge of your bed and repeat this three times, " ACT, DON'T REACT ". Then throughout every day, start completely ignoring the negative things that occur in your life.

OK, now this is the hard part, start paying attention to the positive things that happen. Give the positives emotion, be reactive to the positives, yell about the good things.

Here is something harder yet, see how many people you can catch being good. Make sure you acknowledge that to them in some way, like, " that was great!' or " good job!" or even just a smile, just be sure to let them know you caught them.

This will not only improve your life, but all those you encounter.

Good luck my children,

John

I had a manager that always said "be pro-active not re-active." Im not sure what that means?

Maybe it's middle age, but after giving this question some thought, I couldn't come up with anything I would change. I accept my flaws as something that makes me who I am, and at this point in my life would be difficult to change. Some changes I have already made. I am more outgoing than I ever was, less critical, and I try to keep negative thoughts to myself.

The changes I will be making in the future have more to do with my life in general, rather than my personal makeup.

Probably stop hanging out with my "friends" Ben & Jerry as much as I do.

John-- very good advice. I second that emotion.

 Rick

P.S.: Today's assignment-- everybody get ahold of Todd Rundgren's album "Second Wind" and listen to the song "Change Myself".
... Repeat daily.

Happy New Year! Rick

Dance Like No One's Watching

We convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, then another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough and we'll be more content when they are. After that we're frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage.

We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, are able to go on a nice vacation, when we retire. The truth is, there's no better time to be happy than right now. If not now, when? Your life will always be filled with challenges.

It's best to admit this to yourself and decide to be happy anyway. One of my favorite quotes comes from Alfred D Souza. He said, "For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life."

This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So, treasure every moment that you have. And treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time... and remember that time waits for no one...

So stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to school, until you lose ten pounds, until you gain ten pounds, until you have kids, until your kids leave the house, until you start work, until you retire, until you get married, until you get divorced, until Friday night, until Sunday morning, until you get a new car or home, until your car or home is paid off, until spring, until summer, until fall, until winter, until you are off welfare, until the first or fifteenth, until your song comes on, until you've had a drink, until you've sobered up, until you die, until you are born again to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy...

Happiness is a journey, not a destination.

Thought for the day:

Work like you don't need money,
Love like you've never been hurt,
And dance like no one's watching.

"You don't dance to get to the other side of the floor."

That quote is from Allen Watts
