Hello,

I am working on framed mirror. Total size: 70" x 108"

The mirror is going to be framed in a Roma Lavo moulding (see attached).
The client wants it leaning vertically, which brings me to my question.

The piece will be secured at the top. The piece will be very heavy. Is there something that can be placed or adhered at the bottom of the frame to add a bit of padding? Or has anyone ever added a backing board piece, along the length of the moulding, slightly wider than the bottom edge, having this piece support the weight?

Thanks all,

K

Lowes has these, 5/8 x 5/8, that would fit in the flat back of the frame. The holes for screws would be mostly out of sight if the frame was later moved to the wall.

I would take the frame right out of the equation when it comes to supporting the weight. Build a hefty subframe (strainer) out of good stable timber, preferably with half-lap joints on the corners, rather than miters. And a few cross braces wouldn't go amiss.
It would need to be perfectly flat as even thick glass can bend and make all the reflected images look lop-sided.
Once you have a good solid foundation, the actual visible frame is just trimming. Good idea to attach it to the subframe with fixings with a bit of 'give' in them in them sideways to allow for any movement in the timbers.

That's an order that should reflect well on your shop. :icon21:

Nice one.

Can't see any distortions. I often wonder how they mount those huge wall-sized mirrors in dance studios. Amazing just how much even a thickish sheet of glass will bend and not all walls are as plumb as they look.

Subframe top and bottom, laser light leveled, glass sits out from wall 3mm to 6mm or whatever's needed.
Usually 6mm mirror, blanket fix back for safety . . .
