Can someone give me the very latest version number for IE? Mine is 6.0.2900.2180.xpop_sp2, etc. I'm experiencing some problems and was told to get the latest. Per usual, the site isn't clear about the version number...or at least it's mud to me.

Thanx.

Cathie,

Paul is right about Firefox. I have been having alot of trouble with our new wireless DSL and thought it was the wireless bogging down. I just finished downloading Firefox and set it up and it really screams!

I accessed about 6 websites all over the world to check out its speed and it is much faster than IE, in my opinion.

Give it a try. The only thing I can't locate on Firefox that I thought would be transferred is my "Favorites" list. Pau, is there something I have missed there??

Okay, you guys: what's your home phone number? I know I'm gettin' on in age, but I'm not so all-fired dumb as these computer difficulties make me feel. Just what block of time should one set aside to deal with all the inevitable foul-ups sure to occur when asking a middle-roader computerphile to fling out caution and go with Firefox?

What programs won't work? Which mailbox will be unavailable? Which (expletive deleted) web-based technical support h e l l will have to be navigated? If I sound annoyed, you're not close. I love computers, I just think Microsoft is riddled with problematic situations at too many turns.

What do I have to look forward to....swearing-wise?

Forget IE even exists and go Firefox. I have been with firefox for about a year now and love it. I use Mozilla for my browser. Going from one to the other is a piece of cake and all it will take is willingness on your part to "DL" it and install it with a click of the mouse.
I have never been hacked into with the firefox. My computer runs faster, and it is a lot less bug free.I think were up to version 7 now. I know I dont have to "DL" all them patches to fix a patch anymore..If all that will change in time I don't know but for now it's been great. I have been working with computers now, like forever. So I am not a novice at this, but I am still learning.

Go to Bookmarks / Manage Bookmarks / File / Import and then select IE to import from. Voila!

Tom: If you're having problems with the wireless, it may be due to another device using the same 2.4ghz frequency range. I had this problem and had to change the CHANNEL setting in the router's menu. If it happens again, especially when you are using a cordless phone, try flipping it to a higher channel.

So I agree about Firefox. It's the cat's pajamas. Especially helpful, IMO, is tabbed browsing. Love it.

However, there are lots of lazy freaking web programmers and (especially) people who write applications which depend on your browser being IE in order to work. It's absolutely mindblowing. For example, if you want to update your computer with the latest security update from Microsoft, you're going to have to use IE (naturally- being jerks because they can). And there are other things as well; two that come to mind are my wife's real estate program and Sylvan Learning Center's software package. I just don't understand people who can't be bothered to write standards compliant code- they simply test it again one particular quirky browser and if that works they consider themselves done. Bogus. But I digress.

Merps Mom- you are right to ask these questions. I absolutely believe in Firefox, I think it's better in every way, but it is not a panacea. You may well run into other things that break (not because of Firefox.) So reserve some swears.

Another VERY good and SAFE browser is Opera: www.opera.com

This one used to cost $35, now it is free. And it can be made to act (internally) like Internet Explorer so those website that can work only with IE, will think it is IE and work just fine (allegedly, but I haven't had problems with it).

It can also be used to open web pages in tabs, just like FireFox and it is very, very fast.

Here's a screen shot (notice the tabs on the second line from top):

I feel like MerpsMom: too old and crotechety to mess with new stuff. How "fast" is "fast"?

I;m using broadband from comcast and to me that's pretty fast. How fast do I need to go?

Now quirkiness--that's another story. Will Firefox be less quirky and prone to security updates as IE is? that is, NEED security updates like IE?

Is it insane for me to even be thinking of this? I've lived with IE for years, as irritating as it is. I'd need to read up on a whole lot of things if I try changing browers.

How well-supported is Opera? Is it analgous to Firefox? I'm assuming I can find comparisons among these three?

I guess I could d/l one and be ready to use System Restore if I have to, but I think I'd have to have more encouragement.

One down, one to go? Mike Labbe, would you recommend it? Mike Le: it's not often one accepts the label, but "old and crotchety" fits today.

:D

I'm just tired of being dragged around by this monster. Maybe Firefox wouldn't be much different.

>Mike Labbe, would you recommend it?

I have been silent, because i'm not a huge fan of FF. I found it slower and quirky, and I didn't care for how they were overly confident about it a being safer than the others. I think they confused a lack of people trying to exploit it with stability. That actually changed about a year ago, and it has had far more exploits in the past 12 months than IE. Microsoft/IE is no angel either, believe me!

To be fair, it has been over a year since I tried it and there may be a more stable version now.

Competition is a very GOOD thing and it would be a shame if everyone used the same of anything.

My advice is to install it and see for yourself. Then you can report your impressions here. Everyone has different tastes, and you may very well love it! Opera is another nice browser, although mostly used in the APPLE/MAC world.

If you're having other random issues, try scanning with ad-aware (www.download.com) to remove any infections.

Let us know!
Mike

That's a rather sweeping statement Lance. I wonder why you'd consider a highly rated browser like Opera a virus. You're scaring off people with such words while providing no proof or alternatives.

Are you implying it is less stable and less safe than IE? I think nothing is less reliable than IE!

As for FireFox, and I am replying to MerpsMom here:

What kind of support do you get with Internet Explorer? None really. FireFox also has automatic updates and has user supported forums.

FireFox is free, safe, fast and is easy to use. You can use it without reading a manual. It starts just like IE (double click, it starts, type in an address, it goes there, etc). But it can be customized to make your browsing and life easier.

One of its advantages (which you don't need to learn to make it work, but it is there just in case is "tabbed" browsing). Which means you can have TheGrumble, CNN, Yahoo, Google, Hotmail, XYZ, or whatever, all open at the same time, but neatly hidden. You can switch between them just by clicking on the tab where each open is located. hence the name "tabbed" browsing. See screen shot below.

You can certainly call me if you need me to elaborate on this or explain further on the subject.

Cathie, download and install firefox. It's the way to go. Just be prepared to use IE on occasion, if you happen to use SW written by lazy slobs.

Cathie,

I looked at it this way, I can always go back to IE and there's no harm done. You will run into a question during the installation whether you want to make FF your default browser. (You already have IE as your default browser.) If you click on "yes" the installation program will replace IE with FF in your internet options. If you decide that you don't like FF you can easily change back to having IE as your default browser.

Don't get me wrong, I am not pushing FF on you or anything like that, I just downloaded it today and don't have any experience at all with it but I was impressed all afternoon with the speed that it switched from one URL to another and it definitely speeded up my internet browsing by at least double if not more.

Mike mentioned something about changing channels on the wireless setup to get more speed out of my browsing. I don't think that was the main problem now that I have used this FF browser. I really think that IE was the culprit but I am going to switch back and forth just to check it out. If there is something else going on I will be sure to post here about it. I don't want to give IE a bad rap for something that it isn't responsible for.

I upgraded my FireFox today from 1.0.4 to 1.5.0.1 and have to say it has greatly improved. (I'm using it to type this now) No crashes at all this time, and it's stable and user friendly. The older 1.0.4 would crash often, and didn't make a very good impression.

The only thing I had an issue with, concerned the way it displays animated GIF files. For example, deacon's new XL avatar doesn't display properly during the animation. Then again, that could be some kind of FF conflict with this old test machine i'm using at the moment. (Windows 98 SE)

Try it yourself and see which you like.

Mike

Yeah, you are correct, Mike. It looks like deacon's little guy is swimming right out of the cup!!

But Ron's avatar and all the little graemlins appear to be operating correctly.

Hmm, I should have checked deacon's source file on his avatar, maybe the format is causing the glitch.

Edit: I couldn't get into his source code but it appears that the FF browser is possibly reading his X and Y coordinates wrong on the layers that make the movement appear. That is definitely something that may be a problem.

Framerguy - I tried to reduce and rotate the image, then tried to undo and resubmit. Please tell me what to do to make it right, if possible!

(I know just enough to be dangerous) Thanks!

Don't change it! It's perfectly you..... just ever so slightly "out of the cup" :D

Come on Dave, you laughed and you know it.

FF: unstable?!?!?! first I've ever heard about it. Please don't tell my machine about that.
When I have to go in with Exploder, I get 3-50 viruses and a lock-up within 30 minutes...

I'm gone to some pretty freaky places with Mozzilla and always come away clean.

I went to a site out of Checkelslovakia and within about 6 seconds had a screen full of pop-up block notification.... vewy scawy.... but then AVG and SPyBot never found anything...

LOL Deaconsbench I've been trying to figure out what your avatar was doing. Honestly from my end it looked like a sea turtle trying to escape an oil spill in a coffee cup. Sorry

Keep talking: I'm getting more bold by the hour. On another note: I don't mind paying for spyware, but all the Google clicks produce what LOOKS to be free but really isn't. Is there any particular one I should have, paid for or not? (I just KNOW I had Ad-Aware on this danged machine...but.....maybe spyware is bugging me?

I'm spending too much time on my computer instead of work, but until it's fixed again, I'm horribly distracted by it.

The other day I upgraded one of my Macs to the latest OS 10.4. It comes with a browser called Safari. I've tried it a little, but I find it a bit slow. So far I have to say I still like I.E. better.
Anyone else tried Safari? What do you think?

Baer, I'm confused. You say Ad-Aware and Spybot are the best. So do they not work with IE but do with FF or is it your pop up blocker that only works with ie and with FF you don't really need the additional blocker?

Cathie, good luck in that try. I know what you mean about the computer frustration when something bugs you. I hate to admit the machine has gotten the best of me. I blame it on that small amount of right brain I'm blessed with.

JPete:

AdAware and Spybot are not browser dependent. They work no matter what you browse with.

They are tools to scan your PC for ads and cookies that track you, for example.

A note on their use though: They should not run at the same time. Let either one scan your PC and when done, run the other one. And one should always check if there are new updates for them.
