I received a list of discontinued woods, Clark metals, Framericas and - mostly Bainbridge - matboards from my L-J rep. She emailed them in Word format. I think it's the first time a rep has ever done that, and it's a significant list.

If you didn't get the list, ask your rep. Or, if you can't wait, email me and I'll forward it. It's too long to post here. If I get too many requests, I might post it anyway.

I was lucky. Only two of my stock boards were discontinued.

If you email me, don't include the words 'Viagra,' 'mortgage' or 'enhancement' in the subject line.

(There are quite a few others, but I can't list them here.)

I didn't know Larson ever discontinued any thing. Guess I always rely on my POS: either that or I've never ordered d/c stuff.

Thanx for the heads-up.

The formatting of the Word document is such that I cannot easily post it here, so I've emailed it to the dozen or so of you that requested it.

Next time you see your L-J rep, say, "Hey! Ever heard of email?"

A Bainbridge discontinued list? Really?

No kidding?

WOW!!!

I would love to have access to that!

I've sent the list to Tony and Lance. At least, I think I did. If any of you get an email with no attachment, or an attachment you can't open, let me know.

The Bainbridge list is for boards discontinued by L-J. Presumably, since they are a full-line Bainbridge distributor, these have been discontinued by Bainbridge, though I wouldn't bet my life on it.

You can get a discontinued list at the Nielsen-Bainbridge website, current as of about 1993.

I was faxed the LJ list a week ago or so and pulled those samples. But, on Friday, my Bainbridge rep (Thank you MJ!) came in and pulled another bunch that was more than the LJ list! My sample set was less than two years old, so this was a little surprising to me. Sorry I don't have any electronic or hard copy of the list. I have a pile of samples, but don't have time to try to jot them down this week. I am happily overwhelmed!

If I get this big order out (30 double opening frames with fillets by my Tuesday morning due date) I will try to type up the list if it hasn't been acquired.

You can also get the whole L-J catalog (or just their mouldings) on-line at their web site. They offer it in several formats, DBF, tab delimited, and ? space delimited. Once it is downloaded, if you’re using spreadsheets, you can easily compare the current L-J catalog to your inventory and cull any discontinued items.

The only problem (for us Mac users) is that L-J embeds their catalogs in .exe files and requires a password to open it. The password can be obtained from your sales rep.

I find this online file system to be much easier to update than to search a list one item at a time by hand … or by sight, actually.

Bill, I guess that's the difference between you and me.

I'd rather go through a list of 3 dozen discontinued mats and pull the samples than compare a list of 3,000 with another list of 2,964 and look for the differences.

It's always irked me that distributors will send out a price list with 20,000 items and a note that says, "Any items not on the new price list are discontinued."

That's why I was thrilled to get this list from L-J.

I just checked the LJ downloaded list Bill Henry spoke of and the Disc Mouldings are on there and are not marked disc.

Which brings up another thing that irks me, though I understand why they do it.

Some vendors - L-J included - will only announce a product to be discontinued after they've sold every board or stick in every distribution center in the world. They don't want framers pulling samples while they still have a little product to sell.

Another vendor of mine will let you know when a product is discontinued, discount it for those who want to stock up, and urge you to call before writing an order for a discontinued item. They will walk out to the warehouse and physically check stock when it's getting low. (That's Evald Moulding in Watertown, WI, in case you're interested.)

I am certain there are mats discontinued by Bainbridge that will not show up on the L-J out list until every scrap of mat is gone.

I just recieved a hardcopy list from Bainbridge titled Bainbridge June 2004 Deletions. Three pages. There are 56 entries. (It says so.)

It even has "alternate references for some substitutes. Nice touch.

I can fax it to ONE person if they will scan and post it. Sorry, can't spend more time than that now.

Well, sure, if you want to do it the easy way!

Actually my way is pretty easy, too. I set up L-J’s database as a LOOKUP table and compare my inventory to theirs. When my files cannot find a match (i.e. a discontinued item), it will return an error message which can be flagged. Then I sort the list according to the flag and violà, all the D/Cs are at the top all by their lonesome. The tough part is finding the stupid corner samples in the display racks.

To me my computer is not just a cool business tool, but a plaything, too. I would love to be able to use it to print out Post-It notes, but they keep sticking to the feed tray.

I just checked the Nielsen-Bainbridge website to see if the deletions list that Cliff got was on it. That would make a lot of sense, right?

They have the deletions lists according to "seasons" and the most recent one is from spring of 2001.

Even if you wanted to check your samples against the 3-year-old list - in case you didn't notice your favorite mat was discontinued three years ago - you'd actually have to look at about 20 deletions lists, since there is no "master" list.

I know I've ranted about this at least 800 times on TG, but this is just inconceivable to me.

How many of you with websites haven't updated them in three years?

See, Martin at Lion? This is why it's called The Grumble.

"The tough part is finding the stupid corner samples in the display racks." Bill Henry

I have a separate column in my mat board data base that classifies each sample by color, Red, Yellow Blue, Green, Orange, Violet, Black, White --- Browns are Oranges Grays are Blacks. Each mat is color coded with the same colors and arranged in the mat rack by color. When I get the discontinued list I pull the mat samples, then check the storage bins for stock on hand. If there is stock on hand, I write the size of the stock on hand right beside the mat number on the corner sample. Or I note if full or half sheets are left.

"Another vendor of mine will let you know when a product is discontinued, discount it for those who want to stock up,..." Ron Eggers

One of my vendors will charge a higher price for discontinued boards. Supply and demand!

Mitch

Placed my order w/LJ for Friday's delivery. Ordered two Bainbridge flaxens and was told all flaxens are discontinued, but one of the ones I wanted is still available for delivery. Ron, I would love to have your list.

I shecked this list, so it should be correct, by I typed it fast, so use at your own discretion.

This is the list I got from Bainbridge without the names and "Alternate References" (sorry)

Oh poop, I went through it from Ron's list, found a few which we never used. I think I'll just take my chances and deal with them one at a time.

I only had one of the wood mouldings still out for sale and I never was happy with the Clarks after LJ purchased them. I think they held back on some of the recipe.

Thanks for all the info.

I didn't mention before, but the list came with my new nielsen profile samples. Profile #24 in brushed colors. Very nice. I like them. They also came with a new set of suede corner samples that are all available in 40 x 60 and some new styles they call "textured" that might be interesting.

RON:
Thanks for the email.

BTW am I behind the times or did anyone receive a CRESCENT discontinued list recently? Our Crescent rep was in today with some disc information. If this is news let me know and I'll post the list (it's at the store)

Tony

Wow! Thank you all for posting this! When I called LJ today, they told me that the only way to get this information was to go to their web site and search item by item - or I could keep the customer service person on the phone for hours going over the price list one item at a time - which the customer service person admitted some people were doing. Seems the simple solution of posting the list on the web site, and/or sending a list out with deliveries or statements, would cost less than a customer keeping a LJ employee on the line going over items one by one.

The surprising thing to me on the Bainbridge matboards is how hard it is to find out if something is really discontinued. I ordered B 4951 Dungaree Denim in November, 2003. It was out of stock at LJ and backordered for about 8 weeks. I called another vendor, who had 4 sheets left in stock. They told me that it was discontinued by Bainbridge. I double checked with LJ, and customer service said that it wasn't so far as they knew. Bainbridge said that it wasn't on their list, and referred me to their web site (which is pretty out of date, as Ron noted). Now I know for sure that it is.

Thanks again for helping to keep us all in the loop!

We also received the Crescent list sometime last week (along with their new samples). Nothing that I really use was in it.

Jana, I was pushing that idea some time ago and there was some resistance here. The thought was that such posts would be "too commercial."

I don't see it that way. Discontinued lists of such nearly universal products as Bainbridge, Nielsen and Crescent would be a service to almost all Grumblers, and I'll continue to campaign for them.

I agree. I just received a list of Bainbridge discontinued mats, and was shocked to see that many had been discontinued back in Sept 2003! Seeing as I, and I am sure most of the Grumbler's here, check the Grumble at least once a day, I think it would benefit most if there was a list of discontiued whatevers posted on the Grumble.

You have my vote, Ron.

What if it's done by a volunteer who maintains a central list?

That might work

I would never suggest that ALL of our suppliers should post discontinued lists here. There must be hundreds of them.

But I'll bet nearly all of us use Bainbridge, Nielsen and Crescent and a pretty high percentage use L-J.

To my knowledge, nobody from L-J has ever posted to TG in an official capacity, so it might need to be somebody that's already here that posts the lists.

I'll talk to my L-J rep and Vicki Bergeron from Crescent. Nobody from Bainbridge is talking to me these days, but I'll see what I can do there.

I contacted my N-B rep and she emailed me the list. Thanks again M.J.

The original is in a Microsoft Word format. I converted it to a spreadsheet (Excel) if any one wants it.

I cannot get the URL feature to work here, but if anyone has an FTP they can download it at my alternative web cache.

The Word document is:

http://home.earthlink.net/~maltwit/Spring_2004_Distributor.doc

and the Excel Document is:

http://home.earthlink.net/~maltwit/Bainbridge_Deletions_2004.xls

Oh, wait a minute, it seems to be working. Click on the links and, with luck, they'll download

About six years ago, I received a discontinued list from Bainbridge that had over 200 items discontinued. This was after about a year of trying to order items that were no longer available. I'm talking good items, they used to have this great strong, out of the tube yellow.....discontinued, that, and many others like it.

I solved the whole problem, I tossed ALL of their samples. I have never regretted it. We only show Crescent, TrueVue, and Artique.

Bainbridge has been like that for years, it is the most unstable line of mats in existence. It's a shame, it is a nice line of product, it just keeps changing faster than I, or my customers, can keep up with it.

John

Of course Charles is the one Grumbler who couldn't care less how many matboards are discontinued. :D

I talked to my NB rep today, and she told me they are changing their discontinued format so it coincides with the new specifiers. Thought that was nice. Now I won't have to have DISC on color chips on the old specifiers.

Just received my spring 2004 Bainbridge box - included were the June 2004 discontinued mats list and updated 4" samples. Also included were tabs to update all suedes to 40 x 60.

Pat :D
