Yo! I received a large poster to frame and I'm a little perplexed about the mounting of it. The dimensions are a whopping 93 x 46 vertical. It's a heavy vintage print backed with linen and needs conservation framing. Are there any suggestions on mounting such a large thing without sagging??

Any help would be much appreciated

Firstly welcome to The G. Perhaps you can share a little information about yourself, along the lines of this link or this one or this one. Everyone will appreciate it, and you will probably get a warmer welcome as a result.

Delan,
Assuming that you won't be adding matting to a piece this size and just putting a frame arround it, the "mounting" of the art is quite easy. Almost all original vintage posters are mounted on a linnen backing 2" or so wider than the paper. If you are going to trim this excess linnen off to frame the print tight you can leave three to four 1 1/2" - 2" tabs of the linen on the top of the print to use insted of hinging tape. Use 4ply backing as your primary backing material and glue that down to a stronger subtrate such as gator board. Fold the linnen tabs over the top of the backing material and adhere the tabs to the back of the backing. This methode has never failed for me on pieces as large as 115" x 58".

You should never actualy mount these vintage posters as it will greatly decrease the value of the art, as is the case with any collectible art.

Picture Framing Magazine, August, 2005, page 60: "Framing a Vintage Poster". That one is only 32-1/2" x 42-1/2", but the frame design will work in any size.

Another thought...

For preservation, I guess you plan to use UV-filtering acrylic, such as CYRO OP-3.

If price is not an issue, consider using optically-coated, anti-reflection acrylic. It is now available 72" x 120" x 6 mm thick. It is almost invisible, but at about $4800. per sheet, not a product for everyday use.

LOL!!! At $4800 per sheet I doubt that even I have a client willing to foot the bill for that sheet.
