Most schools usually want you to get the computer through them, which will be pre-installed with their mandatory antivirus, corporate email, word processing, and their internal networking system/vpn for course work distribution/submission. (depending on the major, it may include other course related software) They have a 'factory image' for the school, pre set up with all their stuff. It'll usually be heavily discounted, and will include a loaner program and support/repair center right on the campus. Most schools use Dell for this.
Some schools will also do this with an Apple equivalent option, configured the same way. (I believe Quinnipiac is one that recently started doing it for both platforms)
Just make sure that whatever major it is doesnt include use of windows only business software, or you'd also have to get windows emulation software (or dual boot/boot camp with a windows license) for the Apple product, to make that happen. If so, this will have to be figured into the cost, too.
In short, I would check with the school first to see what they offer/require for his major - and if they have a discount program.
