My new laptop has been great and makes quick, easy internet connection. However, it is not connecting to the router I have at work, and the message reads that it is not compatible or not setup for that router. It has always connected perfectly until today. What did I do and what can I do to correct this problem? The router name is listed as an option but has a red X that it is not available.

Did you move the computer from home to work without shutting it down first. Try restarting the computer and that may correct the problem.

Another possible solution is to plug the laptop into the router and once wired try to connect to the wireless network.

Let's try a couple things:

Go to the list of wireless networks, on the laptop.

You can then disconnect, if connected.

Then click the name that represents your network, and click CONNECT.

It will ask you one time for the access password. (the encryption key that you set, in the router, hopefully for WPA encryption)

Once you put the correct password in, it should remember it and work forever.

If you don't know the password, it's possible that the router isn't set up with a password. If so, you can go into the router. (example for Linksys brand, the address you would go to from a computer that WORKS is http://192.168.1.1 admin/admin)
-Click Wireless Networks
-Click Wireless Security
-From there, you can set it to WPA encryption
-From there, you can also assign (or view) the 10 character password/key
-Save the changes
(Note the instructions above will vary somewhat, depending on the brand and model)

After that, you can go back to the wireless laptop. Disconnect and reconnect to your network, and supply the password/key entered above.

I hope this is helpful,
Mike

Thanks Mike. Yes, I did move it from home to work without shutting it down. I tried restarting it yesterday, but that did not correct the problem. I do have Linksys and I will try what you suggested. If that doesn't work I will be back with more questions . . . or I will be back to confirm it worked.

Thanks again.

Hip Hip Hooray! Got it connected. Your directions were right on except for one dialog box, but I winged it and it worked. You are my hero and saved me $$$ which I would have had to pay the local computer guy.

Excellent!

Mike
