kooltack

No problems with Kooltack yet. I don't have any lengthy history with it yet but as of now it is my board of choice especially when I'm working with something that can't take much heat.

Nice stuff. Works as advertised. Had dinner once with the Len - the guy who made it - he knows his stuff. I understood about 1/4 of what he said : )

Kooltack: GREAT PRODUCT

This is the best dry mounting product. Better, faster, & lower temp than other dry mounting foam boards. The standard board can even be reheated & reused a few times unlike other standard boards. There are also many other variations like Gator kooltack, acid free, remountable/reversible museum type, etc. They even have a special 10 year warranty on a completely revolutionary release "Permalon" board that's a plastic type of substance.
Does anyone know who developed & improved Speedmount before the current product. Think about the timing.
Get a trial 16x20 pack & TRY IT! Works better than anything.

From my local distributor, Kool Tack boards are less costly than similar boards of other brands. The Perma-Lon release board is a unique Look Tack product and offers the advantage of eliminating orange-peel.

Long term bond problems? I have not heard of anything like that with any Kool tack product. However, any heat-activated adhesive will fail prematurely if used incorrectly. Framers often short-cut the manufacturer's instructions and create their own bonding problems.

Kool Tack is as good as it gets. It was originally created several years ago by Len Lastuck, and sold to Bainbridge which switched the name to as we all know "Speed Mount". Len continued to hear complaints in the field about "Speed Mount" and the adhesive holding. After visiting with Bainbridge he found to save a couple hundred K a year that they were not using the same ammount of adhesive required. Once his arrangement or whatever it was, was up with Bainbridge, he wen't back to his original product Kool Tack. BEST PRODUCT ON THE MARKET, and will never use another heat activated product other than Kool Tack.

Kool Tack Testing

"...offers the advantage of eliminating orange-peel."

I tested the product just this past week and do have comments.

First I'd like to reiterate that orange peel comes from both above and below the mounted image. A perfectly smooth substrate mounted with a commercial release board creates OP every bit as much as a lumpy substrate will show OP too. Be very careful of any nonporous release panel. Being made of either Mylar or Lexan can trap air between the release material and the substrate. The release material really should be porous.

From initial testing Kool Tack seems to be a very nice product. Looks like it will be giving a few others a real run for their money. It holds plain paper, coated paper, heavy paper, RC photos, digital photos, dye sublimation, and inkjet nicely. It doesn't hold digital canvas well. Preserve is wonderful for photos. I had to increase the time to 1 minute in the mechanical press at 160F. All in all a nice product.

My PFM August article "HA Boards" has a spread sheet that will give additional information.

Referring to Kooltack, the heat activated foamboard + Permalon, the new release board that's made to be used with Kooltack? The foam can also be used independently & is the original formula of the board so many of us used for low temp & quick mounting, from my understanding. The adhesive is not avail "over the counter".
