I have a couple sets of blades that need sharpening but do I need to find out the blade angle before sending them to a local machine shop or is it best to ship them off to a shop that is used to sharpening chopper blades? The previous owner had them sharpened locally but wasnt sure if they ground them at the correct angle.

Use a dedicated company that knows miter knives. Tech Mark, and Quality Saw and Knife are two that are popular with Grumblers.
If you want to get into the argument about flat-ground vs. hollow-ground sharpening, do a search on the topic. You'll find plenty of discussion here. Tech Mark preaches the gospel of hollow grinding. Some say flat grind lasts longer. Maybe it's a "Tastes Great / Less Filling" type of argument. Anyway, the Jyden is a great machine, and sharp blades are your best friend.

We have used a local sharpener ,sadly the older gent retired. The young buck who bought his business knew diddly about sharpening and the blades were horrid and burred. Now we have a new local guy, another older gent who takes pride in his work and knows his trade. That's the trick, finding someone with a feel for it. Having a skilled craftsman like that comes in handy for other things from time to time. It is worth currying the relationship of a local grinder if one is avail. Mailing away works too if it is the only option.

I ship out. And if the blades are far gone and in need of replacing the folks that specialize can tell you that. The folks that know how to sharpen can always sharpen the blades, but they may not know the specs of the chopper, like a specialist does.

So curry the favor of a local machinist, great resource, but send those blades to a specialist.

definitely go with a specialist .For years i sent mine off then the company went out of business so i tried my local guy.He not only charged me five times as much he also ruined my blades and took two months to do the job.I now go with a guy in new york ,i am in kentucky. The turnaround including shipping is about 7 days and my fee is never over 25 dollars and he does a wonderful job.

Thanks for the info, I'll ponder(southern term)over the suggestions but probably send them off until I find someone reliable locally.

I had the same problems with all the local guys...But Raleigh Saw CO. does the best job ever and very resonable. Raleigh NC. good luck
