I don't play a lot of internet video clips, but once in a while I'd like to. For example, I wanted to play the "Pineapple! Pineapple!" clip posted on Warped last week. Also, Decor's LocalFrameShop.com offers online instructional videos.

When I try to play an internet video clip on any of my computers, the result is consistently the same: It loads for a while, usually 15-45 seconds, and then begins to play. But it plays only for a few seconds before it freezes on a frame. Then, a few seconds later it resumes playing for a few more seconds, then freezes again...and again...and again. Audio stops with the video.

I guess it freezes longer than it plays. Other than that, quality of the image and sound is generally good.

Because the problem is consistent among my 3 computers, all of which have Win XP and 1gb of RAM, I guess it is either in the default configuration, or the internet connection, which is a partial T-1 line @ 256kbps. I tend to think it is not the computer setup, because DVD movies play OK, such as Vivian Kistler's instructional videos.

What's going on and how can I fix it? I can upgrade the T-1 to 512kbps or 768kbps. But before I spend that money, I want to know if that is the problem, and whether there is another solution. And if the only answer is to spend another $69 a month for more of this T-1 line, I may think twice, because everything else internet-related works perfectly, and internet video clips are not very important to me...yet.

Cable and normal DSL are not available in this location.

Advice, please?

Hi Jim

The problem is that the internet feed is too slow.

T1's, while reliable, are fairly old technology. A full T1 will run at about 1.54MBits. (MBits/Sec)

In comparison, DSL is usually half of that speed (768KB/sec/~0.7MBits) for the $13-15/month version, and up to 7MBits for the $40-$50/month version.

Cable is 1MBit for the $15/mo version, $39/mo for the ~5MBit version, $49/mo for the 15MBit version.

FIOS is 5MBit for $35/mo, 15MBit for $45/mo, 30MBit for $89.

Fractional T1 is priced much higher and has a max of 1.54. Your current speed is one third of the $15/month DSL, and I'd bet that you're paying a high monthly fee.

Those are the prices in my market.

If cable or DSL are options in your market, they might be worthy of consideration. You'll save some money and get a much faster speed. You can install a router to network your computers, or the one you have now may be sufficient.

Very soon, 100MBit will be the standard. It's already being tested in some markets. Wireless is also available in most major cities, but its fairly slow.

Thanks, Paul. I hadn't thought of that. I have plenty of hard drive capacity, and I could delete it later.

Mike, I can not get DSL here at any price. The telco switching stations are too far away, and TV cable is not available in this shopping center.

My 256kbps partial T-1 is included free in my 60 month contract with Choice One. At the time it was my only choice for high speed internet -- still is. I can upgrade to 512 kbps for $49/month or 768 kbps for $69/month, plus a one-time fee of $50.

I hate down loading things . . . and for youtube, I haven't figured out if you can down load anyway...

so as it starts to load, I just hit the pause button, and move on to working on something else like an article or something.. after a few minutes I tab back to see if it's at least buffered half of the video, then hit the play.
As long as you have about a quarter of the vid buffered, you should be fine Jim.

Ah the thread is about speed, I thought it was about the content of some videos!

Baer I suggest the same tactic, get the video started, hit pause then watch when you have some of it buffered.
