At 5 pm today PMA - the Photo Marketing Association - released the following statement:

PMA and CES announce colocation at 2012 International CES

JACKSON, Mich. - The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and PMA International have agreed in principle to move the 2011 PMA International Convention and Trade Show (aka CliQ 2011) to colocate with 2012 International CES, January 10-13, 2012, in Las Vegas, Nev.

"We are excited about the potential this agreement brings to significantly add to the CES digital imaging product offering for our buying audience," says Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CEA. "Consumer electronics (CE) technology has ushered in a rapid convergence of digital photography with home entertainment systems. Home media centers, high-definition TVs, and wireless networks will continue to accelerate this trend. The breadth and scope of digital imaging product offerings the PMA trade show is noted for will complement and further expand our extensive growth in this product category."

PMA@CES will offer industry-specific content and display products representing all aspects of digital imaging. PMA will also offer its well-known educational seminars, complementing and enhancing CES programming.

"PMA colocation with CES creates a great opportunity for our combined audiences to learn from each other, grow, and take full advantage of the integration and connectivity of personal content (in the form of digital photography) and home entertainment," notes Ted Fox, executive director, PMA. "This convergence will expand with continued enhancements to camera phones and tablets."

The multi-year agreement was initiated in response to the production uncertainties brought about by the Japan earthquake and tsunami in March.

According to Shapiro, "Our agreement [with PMA] is an excellent example of two trade associations coming together to constructively and proactively meet the challenges brought about by this unforeseen event."

That's actually fantastic, to have it merged with a show as big as CES. I have always wanted to attend CES, and this is a great incentive to do them together.

I sure hope this helps. I felt CES was too big and would swallow up PMA. I have been to CES a few times with prior companies I have worked with and it is a hugh show. I was hopeing that they word do this with a smaller show other than the largest show in Vegas.

Hotels are hard to get then and expensive from what I remember. So book early.

I wonder how PPFA will fall in this?

I note that CES has four membership criteria:

  • Manufacture, distribute, or develop technology used in consumer electronics?
  • Sell CE products online or via showroom directly to consumers?
  • Install home automation or entertainment solutions?
  • Provide solutions, conduct B2B services, or do business within the CE industry

Not a lot of relevance for picture framing ... yeh I know we occasionally frame a TV, occasionally stuff an LED in a shadowbox, some do printing etc. ... but surely framing is even more of a stepchild in CES.

Thoughts?

Not to rain on this parade, but I completely disagree. CES is arguably the biggest trade show in Vegas each year. Booth space is incredibly expensive, and lodging reflects supply/demand, making it one of the most expensive weeks in Vegas.

What already seemed like an ill fit between PMA and PPFA, now seems even worse. There were already very few framing-related booths at PMA; now there will be even fewer, if that is possible. PPFA should re-align itself with the home furnishings industry, which is where it always belonged.

It's sad that the dates don't coincide with the dates of the World Market Center. I went there during WCAF for a few hours and found it very interesting.

Not only that, but CES is held the 2nd week in January each year (Jan 10-13, 2012) this puts it in direct competition with WCAF. Not good.

This just released

PPFA convention to move to Las Vegas in January

JACKSON, Mich. – PMA International announces the Professional Picture Framers Association (PPFA), a PMA member association, will move its annual convention to Las Vegas, Nev., in January 2012. The dates and location will be announced when details are final. The event, however, will not collocate with the PMA@CES show announced today.

“I’m thrilled we are able to move the PPFA conference, International Framing Competition, and certification programs back to Las Vegas at the end of January,” says Ken Link, CPF, Picture This & More, Alton, Ill., and president of the PPFA board of directors. “It promises to be another exciting and educational framing week in Vegas.”

“I’m excited the PPFA conference is heading back to Vegas in January,” says Mark Klostermeyer, MCPF, owner of Design Frames LLC, Falls Church, Va., and president-elect of PMA. “It’s a location and time that is convenient to a large portion of our membership and takes place after the busy holiday season. It will be a place where retailers and suppliers can gather – sharing new ideas and building networks that enable our businesses to grow.

“The convention is always filled with fresh ideas and creativity – from leadership events to certification programs and the International Framing Competition. But most important is the opportunity to get back together with industry friends and colleagues, enjoying our time together while celebrating the talents of our profession,” he adds. “And January is the perfect time to get away from the shop after the busy holiday season, relax a bit in a terrific resort city, and recharge your creative mind as you soak up all the new ideas the people in our industry have to offer.”

================
As you can see, PPFA convention is yet to be scheduled and is unlikely to be held in conjunction with CES.

As Paul point out, I think the "white elephant" in the room will be it's potentially close timing to WCAF?

Mark Klostermeyer does quote that "January" will be the timing for the PPFA convention, regardless of CES timing?

Will most framers (PPFA members included) be inclined to attend to both WCAF and PPFA within a few weeks (depending on the dates) of each other, at the same destination?

Maybe one of the moderators could make a voting poll for this... will you attend both shows, WCAF, or PPFA - once the dates for PPFA are revealed?

Cheers,

Jared

I am not a betting man but if I were-

I would put my money on the PPFA Convention and the WCAF either running concurrently or the two organizations partering as CES and PMA did for their show.

This would be a huge win for all-

If you wanted to attend the CES Show, as a PPFA member, you now have credentials and access to the PMA Convention and the CES Show!

Framers will no longer have to choose between the PPFA Convention OR the WCAF as they will be at the same time/place!

It could indeed be very interesting if your speculation pans out, Rob....Could be a win/win for both suppliers and attendees.
Ordinarily, I'm not a fan of consolidations in general, because they tend to put all eggs in one basket and it goes against the principle of safety in numbers. However, economic and other conditions being what they are, this seems like it might be a good solution at least for now. It doesn't mean there couldn't be separate events in the future if it doesn't work so well.

P.S. The CES would definitely be fun. Maybe they hand out sample iPods, instead of 24" spools of new rabbet sealing tape.

If they are on at exactly the same time and place, it will absolutely be necessary to make some choices, unless people can be in two places at once!

I would like to see WCAF and PPFA back to back as they were in 2008. It would make both conferences more attractive to framers from other countries, because they could get both for the cost of one airfare!

I guess it also could be more attractive to US and Canadian framers for the same reason!
