Hello,

I am an artist and photographer in Florida. I do most of my own framing and mat cutting. However, I would like to offer my work on frameless hollow-core art prints. I heard from someone that many of the frameless Art prints sold at stores like TARGET and WAL-MART are made in beautiful Canada. I am not sure what they are called, but I would describe them to be like hollow, lightweight, standouts that are sold by www.Mpix.com . The ones sold at TARGET are obviously innexpensive to manufacture (given their price) but are still very good quality. Of course, I understand TARGET has the buying power to make thousands of these (keeping the rpice low) but if i could find manufacturers of these, I may be able to benefit with reasonable quanitites that fit my budget.

Well, if anyone knows then please reply.

Thank you.

The "standouts" shown are just dry mounted onto 1" or some size black gator board. Most photo labs do this, you could to with your own press and table saw.

RParrish,

Thank you for your reply -- I really appreciate it.

However, I just used the Mpix standouts as an example. But these are not what is offered at department stores like Target. These are very lightweight, approx. 2" thick hollow-core substrates that art prints are mounted on. They are nothing like gatorboard or ultra thick foam boards. Also, their pricing is extremely low and I am pretty sure they don't use foam.

I heard from someone that many of these manufacturers are in Canada (possibly some in the USA). if anyone knows of any sources then please reply.

Thanks again

Many of the items you see are made by cutting MDF strips 2" wide and then turning them on their side to give the depth. The corners are typically cross braced and then in most cases the art is mounted to Masonite which is glued to the box with hot glue. Pam Fasteners sells top quality, high volume hot glue guns and sticks by the case. One Grumbler refers to the glue stick quantity as a metric buttload. I think the case was in the $80 range but you won't need to reorder for a decade or so. I'm sure they would have a glue stick that would also work on your Diebond application as well. Call them and tell them what you want to stick together and they will tell you what works.

Also here is a source for Standoffs which are used for sturdy panels such as 1/4" plex of aluminum.
