Is anyone else having pen issues with the Wizard 9000?

:cry:I can't seem to find a pen that will cosistently draw lines without either fading out after it makes a turn, or smearing at the top right corner because the mat cutter's footplate hasn't given enough time to dry before sliding over it. I've used the Precise V7 pen that came with the mat cutter, and also tried uni-ball's smear-resistent #70877 rolling ball, and that did smear. Has anyone else had these problems?

We have not had that promlem. When you set-up the pen you need to also set how long you want the pen to stop at the corner and how much backup you need for that pen in the corner. We have also found that because we are working with gel ink pens that they should be stored so that the ink stays in the tip--no air space--this will cause pen not to flow even.

As for other pens. We use the "Prismacolor" fine metallic silver and gold for a wider line. --must set these pens with very low dial setting and make sure the tip is ready to draw

"Point to remember" --When you change the head dial it changes where the design will be drawn on the mat--changes the "home" setting. For this reason it is hard to match different pens in the same design.

If you use the Staedtler Maxum Gel metalic pens for your designs they will need a larger dial setting because the point is shorted. This is were we had problems with the designs. The "V7" used a dial setting of 7 while the maxum wanted 12-13 to get the results we wanted---this moved the design to the left about 3/8 ".

We have desided that like the cost of mat blades the cost of new pens is cheaper than the matboard. The maxum can be found at places like Walgreens for about $5.00 (set of eight color pens) and the "V7" comes in a box of 12 at Staples for under $14.00 in Red and Black.

Thanks for the tips. I'll keep my idle pen upright and see if that helps.
So far I have only drawn lines with the same thickness in the design. If Ihave a complex design with varied thicknesses, I print them on my epson 7600.

I have not had the problem with smearing lines what board are you using it on?

It smeared on Crescent rag silver grey 1602. So I switched to crescent 9592 blizzard and it still smeared. It doesn't happen all the time, but it happens enough to make me nervous each time I draw a line.

I'm not familiar with the Wizard pen holder configuration, but would it help to reverse the direction of the pen? That is, make it draw backwards. Perhaps that would make the footplate run on the other side of the drawn lines? Just guessing.

On my machine, there are no footplates on the drawing or debossing heads, so smearing is not an isssue.

Steve, if that does not work, just call the Wizard Help Desk. The people there are happy to help with any problem you have, and it doesn't cost a thing to get that help.
