Since the ipod is charged by plugging it into the usb of the computer, will it work in a computer in Germany without any adaptations?

I think that as long as the German computer is equipped with USB you'll be fine. I can't imagine a usb port not conforming to certain standards, like power output.

Now for the ipod to connect and be used on the computer, you'll either need a Mac, or itunes for Windows (if there is such a thing).

It'll work fine.

It'll also charge in some cars that have USB on the dash, in Xbox 360 game systems, many cable or satellite receivers have USB, etc.

Most of the latest electronic stuff work in any typical voltage in any country. They have voltage sensing solid state power supplies. My Canon camera charger says 100-240 volts 50/60 Hz on it. My son in law has the same unit and travels the world - says it works anywhere as long as you have the right plug.

What does the "if there is such a thing" comment mean? I interpret it as you are unsure whether "iTunes for Windows" exists. Well, there are by far more people using iTunes for Windows than iTunes for OSX. It wasn't until October 2004, when Apple made the iPod compatible with Windows, that the iPod truly took off (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipod). Apple totally dominates the portable music player business, but Microsoft's Windows has about 90% of the computer operating system market. It is pretty easy math.

Yeah Richard D, we Windoze people are deeply insulted how you impugned the good name of our operating system!!;)

Actually it is true, Itunes for Windows really made Apple a money maker, big time.

OK everybody. Settle down. I'm a Mac guy, and not a computer geek. I barely know what to do with the right click on a pc mouse. I thought I had heard about itunes for Windows, but wasn't sure. No offense was meant.

There, now you can get back to trying to get your computer to work.
