Since we have decided to use square for accepting CC, I decided to create an iPad stand that I can put on top of the counter using some left over frames and materials in the shop. I built a prototype but I still do not like the way it looks. Here are a couple of pics:

Right now the legs are mode out of strainer bars. I am thinking of replacing it with nicer looking moulding.
The frame has only 3 sides because I still can't figure out what to do with the top leg.
The little white square dongle sticking out on top left is the CC magnetic swipe.
Any suggestions on how I can put a top leg so it does not interfere with the magnetic swipe?

Thanks in advance,
Troy

For the easel back, maybe just something thinner and in black so it is just in shadow and doesn't show.
The white frame will look more like it's floating in space.
For the swipe, I don't know how much space or room you need so I'm not sure what would work unless you could just round off the tops of the side pieces, paint the exposed wood ends to match the moulding and leave it a 3 sided frame.

For the top leg of the frame cut all of the thickness of the rabbet off. That thin strip left sits on the face of the ipad across the blacked out area. All four sides mitered as usual. Either use a nice easel back or sit the whole thing on a nice looking easel.

Why modify the top rail? Why not just get an earphone extender? That way you'd have the ability to pass the square to the customer and swipe it there.

You could even make a little swiper frame to house the cube. After joining the frame mark where the cube's opening is and run the frame through the table saw to get a kerf opened enough to slide the card through (although this could also be done to the original frame :))

How do you charge the iPad? D you take it out or is the bottom rail adapted?

Thanks Troy.

I was thinking it would be a neat way to swipe, and the iPad could stay on the counter in one spot. Maybe you could make something that you could brand with your business name or business card that could cradle the square reader and hold the cord snug into it. I initially thought a mini frame, but maybe something more friendly to the hand..... (maybe a blueish scarf... :) where is that thing....)

I agree with Bob; forget the top rail. Actually, I would bring the two side rails down about an inch and a half from the top of the iPad and curve the outside edges to match the curve of the iPad. It would soften the lines and be more of an art deco look perhaps? And, of course, paint the exposed wood to match the frame. I was thinking it would look nice in a black frame or one with a gold lip.
Really neat idea to frame an iPad!
