Just a quick question for all of you. What is your average invoice price? Does it go down during X-mas time? Also, just out of curiosity, What is the most expensive frame job you have ever done? (Time to boast)

Invoice averages may not be an apples-to-apples comparison, because the product mix of each business is different, among other things.

For example, if you sell cards, small photo frames, ready-cut mats, gifts and other inexpensive items, your average sale will be lower than a business that only does custom framing. Likewise, a gallery that sells original art will have a higher average invoice than one that sells posters.

Regional trends and cost-of-living differences come into it, too.

Our average sale is just over $100.00, now, but that includes everything we sell. Our average sale for *only* custom framing is usually about 50% more than that. But the averages vary every week, every month, every year.

It's important to understand that such comparisons are worthless in determining the health of one's business.

My average ticket (the sales I personally write up) run between $125.00 to $150.00, depending on the month, including the small stuff. The counter help who writes about the same number of tickets, averages no higher than $114.00. I know, it's obvious I should be on the counter all the time, but it's not possible. I have noticed the tickets are smaller right now, during the holiday season. I have come to the conclusion that during the rest of the year, when people are buying for themselves, they will spend whatever they need to make their work look great. Now that they are buying gifts, they tend to be more conservative. So I expect my average to go down this month. I am working three times harder for the same profit. I can't wait fot the holidays to be over so I can get back to my normal business. Oh, my largest single item was a mirror, just over $1200.00. Not paticularly huge, but I do regularly write up single framing sales between $400.00 and $1000.00

Our average ticket is now up to $202. Our only product is custom framing. We remind ourselves regularly that "Buyers are Liars". Show the best design first and work from there.

Another interesting tidbit is the ratio of artwork price to custom frame price. Our record to date is 349 times the cost of the artwork.

Marc is right. Sometimes it's just fun to brag.
