what speed do you get?

i get 1.5 !! sooooooooooooo slow
 
I use www.speedtest.net



We are using cox.net residential cable at home, and get a very good speed. We have Cox at the shop also, since 2002.

Results will vary depending on the provider, and what the competition in a specific geographic area offers. In our case, we are only supposed to get 25 or 30, but get 90. I'm not complaining! :) Cable and FIOS are battling it out here. DSL is almost done.

WOW Mike,

I didn't even know that anyone was advertising, much less delivering, speeds like that. We're having a good day today. Provisioned for 768k/768k. But that's what we get for living where we live. This also beats Verizon (soon to be Frontier) 3M dsl by quite a bit.

My home and work are on "ADSL 2", which is considered quite fast here. However it's tortoiselike compared to Mike's.

Undoubtedly our cost would be much higher too, because there is little competition. The competition that we do have uses the facilities of the largest supplier, so it's really just a multi level of a monopolised system.

Ripped off yet again!

Pretty fast(not like Mike`s though,Good Gawd!)....I`m spoiled! Get whiney when the Cable is getting upgraded or maintained, then it slows a bit,and I get twitchy...L.(10.11 Mb download..... .96 upload.the company is upping to 20Mb soon)

Mine is not bad.....I think!

 
I’m running pretty much what Paul is ~15 M//s down - ~ 2 up. I’m pretty happy with it.

But, my FiOS carrier (Fairpoint) only gets 2 out of 5 stars – they have been trying to get out from under bankruptcy for a couple of years and are still trying to service people with copper land lines, so, IMO, they’re kind of ignoring their fiber optic network.

FiOS still beats Cable by a mile in my experience.
 
Here in the wilds of VT I'm thrilled we even get high speed. In fact I'm shocked how long we've had it (over 10 years now).

Well each provider has a max/cap for the account. The actual feed "pipe" that supplies your "node" (group of customers in your area) has a much higher speed than what your max/cap is set to. For example a 100MB pipe could feed 100 homes, each capped at 6MB. Since hardly anyone would be requesting the full 6mb at the same time, the average max speed would be close to 6 for all of them. (instead of 1MB) It works like the public water system that feeds your house. If everyone took a shower at the SAME TIME, there wouldn't be any pressure :)

For cable, the "pipe" (node) goes out on the same wire, via telephone poles, and splits off to each customer's home. For DSL or FIOS, it goes to the central office and gets shared there to each house's direct line. The result is the same.

All bandwidth is shared (dsl, cable, fios, etc), so it can be slower if all your neighbors are downloading large files at the same time.

Providers typically sell an "up to" (max) speed cap, which assumes the best case scenario.

In addition, some (cable) offer a "speed burst" technology feature which gives a higher speed for the start of every file downloaded, then it goes down to the normal speed for the rest. (great for small files) I suspect this is why mine has such a high reading. Mine is only supposed to be 25 or 30MB at $52 per month, but I believe the speed test is fooled by seeing the full 100MB during the initial transfer.

Our bill had jumped to 78.00 per month just for 1.5 speed. I said enough is enough and dropped it to the lowest price they offered. And here I am.......
 
I'll have to try this again tonight when I hear the fireworks blasting off. Everyone (except me) ought to be off the Internets by then.
 
Wouldn't Coordinated Universal Time be CUT? Where did they get UCT?

In the mean time, however (LOL) I like the phrase Greenwich Mean Time - I knew it meant that but I didn't know what that meant in real time, see what I mean? I think I have only ever been in one time zone (is Chicago in another time zone?) (So I have been in two time zones if Chicago is in a different one than the one I am in right now)

You would think so, but the world moves in mysterious ways. Greenwich is the London suburb where the British established an observatory and decreed that location be the Prime Meridian and the standard for world time.
